Had a nice surprise today

My nan died a couple of years back. We have lots of boxes in our loft taken for her flat when she died. We have never looked at them as we were told by her that it was a load of rubbish. Over time we just forgot.

On impulse, I grabbed them out of the loft today to have a little look to see if there was anything good in there. It was indeed mostly rubbish. However, at the bottom of one was a little brown metal box that looked very old, almost wartime.

I opened it to find a load of old coins, half pennies and so on. Underneath that there were three ribbons neatly folded. When I lifted the ribbons, I got such a nice surprise what followed them.

My great grandads full WW1 set, 14-15 Star, Service and Victory.

I had been looking for these for yonks. My nan said she didn't know where they were (she had a stroke so just couldn't remember). But I have found them at last and on the 100 year anniversary of the Great War as well. Gonna clean them and frame them with a picture of him :)

Anyone else got their ancestors war medals? I'm still looking for grandads WWII ones.

Man those are awesome!

Don't ever sell them. They are priceless.

Never! The value is supposed to be raising significantly this anniversary year, but I couldn't care less if they were worth 10 grand or more, which they are definitely not. There is only one place for them, on my wall.

Awesome find, and a huge thumbs up from me.

I always find it very sad when people choose to sell off medals just for a bit money. They should be priceless to the families in memory of those who served.

Nice!
I'm not sure I could ever live with the guilt of selling such things, I also don't get people who do so to buy frivolous things.

im 90% sure my grandads old ones are also at the bottom of a metal tin thats full of old coins haha.

Always makes me sad when you see people taking their grandparents medals on these daytime auction programs :(.

I agree. Spinning in their graves has never been more appropriate. To see their duty to the country reduced to just some minor profit that'll be spent on something material. Shocking.

Wow, that must have been an amazing and emotional feeling to find them - well chuffed for you and your family :)

I like the back of the victory medal. Says it all really, apart from the fact they got the dates wrong

The date is technically not wrong as the Treaty of Vesailles was not signed until 1919 which is technically the end of the war.

I did not know this but looked it up and I've now learned something. :)

They will look good framed and hung and are a fitting way to honour a brave man.

Did make me chuckle though, all the times in the last couple of years (and there were quite a few) That I was sitting on the bed watching a war documentary or something and wondering where my great grandads medals were, and all the time they were just a few feet above my head :D

Fantastic find, will look great when framed. And good luck in the search for your grandfathers ww2 medals.:)
