Jailbreak ATV3

plex/xbmc mainly unless someone works on other stuff, also via the atv ios netflix etc aint bad and the simple remote just works. raspbery pi just works just as well but you need to get a case and a remote for it.

I had a Pi for a few weeks and it wasn't as straight forward as just turning on home sharing and all your library being loaded on.

At this stage anyone wanting a small XBMC compatible player may as well wait a couple of months for Ouya as that will have official support.

I have an ATV2, it's been sat doing nothing for ages, I had no idea how much they were selling for now, I think it's time to put it back in the box and bung it on ebay!

If you have a mac at home you don't need to jailbreak it.

i have mine set to share content from itunes which i convert all films to mp4's anyway.

Then i have xbmc on my imac and i do airplay to my apple tv if i want to watch anthing off there

That requires the iMac to be on., whereas I sit on the sofa, access all with my ATV remote to all the content in the NAS, plus the UI is much easier and it can play avi, mkv as well as mp4.

If you have a atv2, it is jut easier to JB it to make the most use of it.

My iMacs always on or only sleep anyway thought most people leave there iMacs on.

But yeh if there was a jailbreak I'd do it straight away.

I got the atv3 as I wanted 1080 didn't want to get stuck at 720.

Right, just read up on this... looks great!

The basic idea is, to...

  • re-use an already available ATV app (like YouTube, Vimeo, Apple Trailers, ...)
  • re-route the request to your local Plex Media Server
  • re-work the reply to fit into AppleTV's XML communication scheme
  • let iOS do the rest

It needs FAQ and idiots guide though! Don't have a clue how I would go about setting it up. I run PMS with all my main content on ReadyNAS (Debian Linux), but if this isn't Linux compatible I do also have a second always-on machine I could run this on (Mac Mini running Moutain Lion).

Westyfield2, unfortunately I didn't get the idiots guide done today as was working on the FAQ after finding out what a PITA it was to add images to a GitHub wiki but I hope to get done tomorrow.
I don't think we will be officially support linux off the bat (a lot more variables to consider although it should run on it as it is a Python script) but I am sure we will get someone to help with a guide soon.

Doh, just realised you're the same person as on the Plex forums!

Yeah, doesn't matter too much if it can't be running on the NAS. I've got a second machine that's always on (Mac that runs a second PMS for plugins only as Flash/Silverlight plugins won't work on the NAS Linux PMS)... so I should be able to have this running on the Mac and then pointing over to the NAS Linux PMS that has all the media.

Hi Guys

I've got my hands on a ATV2 unit, are there any guides that I can follow to JB (Untethered) and then load XMBC?

Many thanks

Mart
