Thomas Hitzlsperger announces he is gay

If given within the context of football, it is news.

Everyone should care, small steps towards something positive.

As usual GD being its usual self.

TBH I think people/media making a big fuss about somebody coming out isn't helping the situation at all. If there wasn't such a fuss about it I'm sure it would attract less attention and reaction from people who are homophobic or whatever.

I honestly don't understand why people make such a big deal of these "high profile" "coming outs". Its not like this is 1930s and its a super huge deal. So what if some one is gay? Not news worthy at all.

Because it's football. No one dares come out because of the many bigoted and homophobic fans.

brings a whole new meaning to his nickname of "Tommy Hammer".... either way, good on the bloke!

Of course it's newsworthy if it's breaking down barriers you clown!

If it helps break down barriers then it's newsworthy. If it leads to positivity then absolutely people should make a song and dance out of it.

Congratulations to him, takes balls to do something like this.

I think this highlights that sport (football) and society are moving in the right direction.

I await the day where this sort of story is not news worthy but alas, it's a reflection upon where we are in society now. I hope his statements provides other footballers with the confidence to be able to be comfortable with whom they are publicly without fear of reprisals. I think it says a lot about football that this is not an issue within the dressing room.

I agree. Although it probably wont be long before the songs and chants start.

But its a foot in the right direction with him doing this.

To that end then, commenting on a post pertaining to him shouldn't be within your remit

My remit? Interesting way of wording stuff. Trying to be clever? Saying things like "to that end then" and "pertaining" you do seem very clever

The Boar is attracted to gay threads like flies on ****, weirdly.

And how weird does that make you, attracted as you are to gay threads and my posts?

Well done to him! Such a shame that he had to wait until his professional career was over to do so and a sad reflection on some of the attitudes in the sport.

Well done Frightful Boar on being a complete clown in a thread about a positive and hopefully progressive story within a micro society where that sort of thing is a taboo, in fact, you can extrapolate this to a wider society and as a whole shows that we are making the right moves in the right direction for society.

Well done on others for being clowns too.

On one hand, good on him, but one the other hand, so what?

I understand how brave it is to come out but the surely the attitude and reaction would be if someone just declared they breath oxygen. They shouldn't deserve any recognition as recognition means you are seeing them different (whether good or bad) and the last thing I would want if I were in his shoes is people see me differently. That was the reason why he didn't come out during his playing career isn't it? That he was afraid that people see him differently and treat him differently. I would want people treat me the same.

News (if I can call it that) like these need to be ignored, the papers will always going to publish them but it should be just ignored. I wouldn't care if any top politician, actor, sportsman or war hero comes out of the closet. It doesn't change what they have done in the past and it's not going to change what they are going to do in the future (unless they are a politician and suddenly give homosexuals more civil liberties, then I would have a problem with that) People need to stop paying attention to these stories.

p.s. I did see this story on BBC News, and my immediate thought was "who?" and "who cares". Not because what he did isn't brave, it's because it shouldn't matter at all. Also disappointed at the BBC putting this on the front page ! This story doesn't deserve the front page, it barely deserved being a footnote.

Oh no, a barrier!

I personally have zero interest in where some chap I've never heard sticks his private parts. Keep that info to yourself please!
In an ideal world this would not be newsworthy. It is, because football has a history of rampant racism, homophobia and whatever other bigotry it can cling to. The fact that there's an almost total absence of openly homosexual footballers is very telling. The lack of role models, the lack of people in society who are openly homosexual, and accepted for that fact, is a tragedy for young people - young people who are killing themselves by the thousand because a world tells them what they are doing is 'wrong'.

Thomas Hitzlsperger announcing he is gay is one small step in the direction of the 'normalisation' of homosexuality, especially in football.
