Just got myself a pair of Apple TV's, wanting to stick XBMC on them so I can stream stuff off of my WHS box.

Jailbreak, or is there another way to get XBMC on there, or even another app/player that'll work with the remote properly and pick up stuff from an NTFS share...

If needs be, other alternatives?

I take it they are ATV2 and not 3. Jailbreak and XMBC is the way to go.

One alternative is Plex but you need to run Plex Server from your WHS box rather than just having your files passively on the NTFS share…

Brand new yesterday, black things, does that help? lol

I have a shuttle under the TV at the mo which runs Win7 with xbmc on it, the idea is to replace that and then sell the shuttle on, we have ipads and iphones in the house as well so the ATV's make sense...

I had heard of Plex previously but not actually looked into it as XBMC does everything I need and is free where some of the Plex apps for Win8/iOS aren't so XBMC won out, how do both deal with different media types, avi/mp4/mkv etc?
Servers only one of the N40L things so theres not much grunt for transcodnig etc.

There's no Jailbreak for the ATV3 at the moment (which is almost 100% the version you have) so you're out of luck on the XBMC front - the only way to stream to them is via iTunes...

Alternatively, I've got a macbook pro and samsung smart tv. I used the eyeconnect app to wirelessly browse all movies or photos on my laptop and stream straight to the tv. No additional hardware needed. :)

Without wanting to hijack the thread, I am considering an Apple TV to allow me to access Netflix in the living room without having to drag my Mac Mini out of the study.

What could Plex / PlexConnect give me that the ATV doesn't already do?

Also a quick look on the PlexConnect site states it can't currently be used with ATV3?

Plex allow you to watch your own media in your hard drives. Netflix is a online streaming service, it's not the same thing.

Plex is also a server, so in theory, you are creating your very own netflix.

That's not the official website, it's a known scam. The official link is here.

PlexConnect CAN be used on the ATV3. That's why it's so popular - it doesn't need a jailbreak.

Thanks.

So I assume this is something ATV can't do, eg view a movie file that resides on your mac? Is the ATV therefore really just a platform for running iTunes / Netflix apps etc with little or no interaction with your other macs, without such a utility like Plex?

Starting to mess with Plex, got it so I can use the app on my ipad and fire stuff at the ATV, just need to tweak the whole python/dns/trailers.apple.com thing to get it straight off of the ATV..

Dont think the cert thing worked, followed the guide but no joy, sits there trying to add the profile then fails...

Thanks.

You can mirror anything you want from your (newish) Mac to the ATv.
