I'm wanting to purchase a ipad for my other half. She will use it primarily for games, FaceTime, web-surfing and Facebook.

Would I be better getting the mini, or mini with retina? She's not bothered about performance. Anything is better then her crappy android phone.

Opinions?

Depends what you can afford. Wife had a mini and we upgraded to the mini retina. Really pleased with the improved display and extra speed. Would definitely recommend the retina one.

The price many shops are selling their remaining new stock of old minis is the price Apple charged for it when they announced the retina mini (£20 or whatever less). You'd have to be mad to buy a standard mini now, but some people still do...

Well, I don't mind buying one second hand. This is why I've also been looking at the nexus 7. I thought with the FaceTime application on the iPad it's more easier then having to open up Skype for her.

I had a look at the Air, but the Mini seems to hit the boxes right.

Same here. I prefer the size of the mini as well, fits in my pockets.

Since my bonus is coming through, i'm going to JL tomorrow to purchase one, if it's in stock that is..

I'm still in two minds. It'll really be used for games, video calling, web browsing. I'm on a little bit of a budget also and feel the iPad as good as it is, I can't justify the cost. I'm going to have to have a proper play with it.

I might just opt to buy a nexus 7 for her as I feel it's worth the money for what it is.

Still unsure, does anyone have both?

I've played with the Nexus 7 and think its great value for money but there are 3 reasons why I won't get one.

1. The shape. It's a smaller screen but is quite long. Bugs me.
2. So much space taken up by default means you pretty much have to get the 32GB model.
3. I have an iPhone, invested in apps, use Airplay and intend to get an Apple TV

I use both at work, mostly for developing but it covers apps/websites and I sometimes use it for media.

Build:

Both are pretty amazing, the rMini feels sturdy due to its metal construction, but to me personally I like the soft touch plastic, it feels slightly warmer and more inviting then the clinical cold metal body for the rMini.

SoC:

rMini wins here pretty convincingly, the A7 is basically as good if not better then the s800 let alone the s600 (The N7 has a lower binned version but calls its a s4 pro).

Screen:

This is the big deciding factor for many. The N7 screen is small enough to fit in 1 hand comfortable, where as the rMini is a stretch. But the rMini gives you a better experience for reading and websites. For gaming the both felt good in the hand. For most apps I liked the extra screen space on the rMini, and the fact that you have more tablet apps helped her too. For media the N7 wins, it offers better colours, and a better aspect ratio.

Apps:

Android is gaining tractions, but iOS is still ahead and always well be.

Way I see it, for gaming and the web I would go with the iPad. For movies and if price is an issue I would go with the N7.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll go for the iPad Mini Retina. The best deal I found was £300 for the 16GB which should be enough.

Had a win up the casino the other night and spent it on the ipad air and if I'm honest it's great, using it for web browsing and 1 game pretty much and as I intend to use it only at home I went for the bigger form factor over the mini.

My phone is a nexus 4 and last iOS device was an iPhone 4 so I've used both systems and for web browsing and games iOS just simply works!

Retina display is a must IMO, especially for reading on websites etc.

1 thing I don't like about ios7 is the colour of the dock, it should be transparent instead of the frosted white colour. It looks rubbish

Edit*

If you order it today the code TDX-Y7M3 may still work on tesco direct to get £30 off. Offer due to end today but don't know what time

Just grabbed a Retina mini for wifety - fabulous piece of kit, and the very first Apple product in the household.
For me, I like the tinkerability of Android for my phone, and Windows for productivity (laptop and tablet), but the iPad is a lovely tablet and perfect for my wife's needs :)
