Have Sony made any official statement - 3D Bluray on PS4?

Well I was pretty close to making the move from my old PS3 to a PS4. It sits in the front room and doubles-up as our Bluray player of choice, so any replacement for our PS3 must offer ability in this department too.
I honestly had absolutely no idea that the PS4 did not support 3D Bluray's. In fact when I was told this, by two separate people no less, I all but accused them of lying!

Anyway, some research later and I find there was no lying - so PS4 is on hold at the moment.
Does anyone know if Sony has actually made any kind of announcement with regards 3D support on the PS4? 2 months, 6 months, a year, never?
Can see (now) plenty of confirmation of no support, but nothing about if/when it's likely to be added?

I wonder if this would just be a firmware upgrade, I don't see any differences between Bluray and 3D Bluray looking on the internets in terms of reading disks... I wonder if the decoder chip would be different...

Expected in a future update but no time frame given. It will likely come with the first big update along with media streaming etc.

Definately coming in future with firmware upgrade but nobody knows when, looks like sony wanted to concentrate solely on the gaming side of things first and get that right then add extra media features to the OS later on, I want to watch man of steel in 3d but have to wait now that I've traded ps3 in :( so I know how frustrating it is

i always buy 3d bluray of a movie if i'm buying and a 3d version exists, tried to watch thor last night and remember ps4 doesn't play them yet :(

Because the BBC ditched 3D means it's dead? lol.

To some it does, they seem to forget Sky has a dedicated 3D channel, which shows content all day, and the 3D blu-rays, games, it might not sell as well as they had hoped, but it's still very popular.

The PS3 was launched years before 3D tv, and only needed a frimware update, so it will be all thats needed for the PS4.

Nope but if a major broadcaster isn't showing any intrest in it, then surely that shows something.

How many channels do Sky have in 3D? One, none on any kind of freeview/freesat.

So still a pretty expensive media. It won't take off to any sort of large scale.

We have an active 3D setup - found the quality that bit better than passive.
Never buy a film "for the 3D" but when the 3D version rarely costs more than the standard we might as well - and quite often we are surprised by the quality of it.

Overall just seems a surprise that from a BR playback point of view the latest and greatest console is a step backwards. I've got fingers crossed they will announce support and I've got no doubt at all if they do it will just be a software/firmware patch that does enable it.
But from a "buyer" point of view, this is a deal-breaker for me. My "not buying" will register nowhere, but no sale from me until the support is added.

i like watching things /playing games in 3d, simple really? Hasn't given me any headaches or anything as of yet. Did not realise the ps4 didn't supported blurays though, bit of a bummer!

3D is not dead it's simply not mainstream mainly due to price I imagine. BBC pulling out means nothing, they would need to create an additional channel first of all then they would need to upgrade all their cameras, etc. All of which costs money that I'm guessing they don't have to burn on something only a small fraction of people have access to.

I don't think 3D is ever going to be mainstream its a niche product, that's why it doesn't fit in with the BBC.

Movies is where 3D excels and I also quite like sky sports in 3D as well you can see a lot more details like the difference in the physical size of players that just don't get represented as well in 2D. You get a visual depth of the pitch and players positioning as if you were there on the field.

It's certainly not a gimmick it has its place and I use it appropriately, I wouldn't watch any old garbage in 3D

Totally agree with that watching the US open (iirc) in 3d made me realise how undulating the course was.

is there any point them doing it ? 3d is dead already , BBC decided to pull out in the summer

And i'd love to know the sales figures for 3d blu ray .....VERY low is my guess

I work in retail and 3D Blu-ray sales aren't bad really. Obviously not as high as regular Blu-ray but we sell more than I initially expected to. It's a niche format, it's certainly not dead.
