A month off work and £2k to spend, where would you go?

2k will sort you for about 2 weeks.

I can never get a plan for a Japan trip inside of that, it always works out massively more money than doing the same in the USA.

I guess you could spend 2 weeks on some bodies sofa or something for that but it hardly counts. I would like to do Japan but it just comes out at silly money each time so I always end up back in the USA.

And that's going with the girlfriend, which significantly reduces the per person cost as you have have 2 to a room, 2 to a rental car etc.

To be honest 2k for a months solo travel is really very little indeed unless you spend it in ultra cheap hostels or something or don't bother moving around much.

Would look at cutting it down to 2 weeks.

Any idea what that other little ring island is, with a tiny population it started with an English explorer and now has 100 or so residents, no money. Lagoon in the middle? Not much to go on. some hot.

Sounds like Pitcairn? That's a set of four islands, two are atols iike you described. Population 50 or so.

edit: The sexual assault case in Pitcairn is fascinating too. I read somewhere that the accused had to build the court house to be tried in!

A lot of it sounds right but other parts don't. It being a seventh day Adventist island is something I thought I would have remember. As some of my relatives are SDAs.but then 10hrs a generators are spot on.

I'm sure it used to get to resupply ships a year, and founded by a British guy and Polynesian wife.

It was on TV a few months ago, on some random channel and random program.

No idea then I'm afraid. Maybe have a dig through this?

edit: actually I remember reading about an island that would get one air resupply a year near xmas time. Sounds familiar?

Taiwan! Though, I would say that. Not for 2 months, it's a bit small, but it has the history and culture, more actual artefacts than China, and actually has nice people in it as well :p

By ship twice a year iirc. Reading up I think it might be Pitcairn. A lot of it seems to fit, but other parts dont.
I know I should have saved it to one note like I usually do, when ever I see some where interesting to do/go.

If the budget is non negotiable then I think an interrail pass and some hostels is your best beat, could see a lot of Europe that way.

I'd go to Tokyo, £2k should be enough for about a week, may be.

Why? Just always wanted to go.

2k will sort you for about 2 weeks.

I wouldn't say more than a week with a £2k budget for Tokyo. You're going to spend about a quarter of that on flights and then spend most of the rest on hotel(s) (exactly how much will depend on how much you are willing to slum it). It's the small costs that will kill you though, food, drinks, misc small travel around.

If you up the budget, like suggested, to stay a bit longer then look at getting a 7 day rail pass for part of it which will allow you to travel around a lot fairly cheaply.

To be honest I'd say look at the actual numbers and see how it works out, it's a great place to visit and I look forward to going back this year myself, but I would more likely look into spending a couple of weeks in the US as [TW]Fox has likely suggested for your budget.

Thailand. It's £1.30 a pint there. Plus there is the Full Moon Party!

and then theres the lady boys ;)

£1.30?? Either prices have drastically shot up or you were in a tourist trap. Parts of Chiang mai I was paying 15bht for a bottle of chang (25p as was just over 60bht to pound when I went)

there have been some huge tax increases on beer, 120-130 THB is about normal now, below 80 takes some doing, Chang Mai may be cheaper but won't be anything like 15THB these days

For a month, alone, on 2k inc flights its going to be a fairly pants road trip. You'd need to sleep in the car as the flights and rental car would take up the majority of the budget :D

You know, there's such a thing as camping... ;) there's also volunteering.

The OP doesn't sound like he would be interested but £1k would get you a month in the wilderness in the US walking or maintaining trails. £2k could easily give you a month in most developing countries, Philippines for example (just got back) or many other places in SE Asia.

I'm really not sure at the moment where I would go with that. Possibly Uganda/ or Rwanda. Do a gorilla trek/tour with an organised company then spend a couple of weeks wandering round on my own. That would probably just fit into the budget. Alternatively possibly spend a month in either Northern Brazil or Peru and do some amazon exploration. It would be much more difficult with just one of you though, ideally you'd want two at a minimum to share some costs.

Dont forget though that the price of the flights to many of these places will take up at least 25-40% of his budget.

You'd probably be horrified to hear I'm about to spend 6 months in Central Asia on a budget of £1800 plus $500 :p.
