I always park with the car in first gear, but the missus doesn't. I've recently been driving the missus' car and have, of course, been parking it in gear. Here's the problem:

She never checks to see if the car is in gear, nor depresses the clutch resulting in the car lurching forward when she goes to start it. She then shouts at me, to which I respond that in reality, she should check it's out of gear anyway. Her answer is that she never leaves the car in gear

Anyway, back to the point - car parked up, do you leave it in gear or not?

I dont put it in gear, but regardless of that I depress the clutch when starting the car

e: unless on steep hill

Always in gear when parked up.

Always put the car into neutral and then start engine.

My car won't start unless the clutch is depressed.

always give the gear stick a bit of a wobble just to check it's not gunna ruin my day :p but rarely ever park in gear, maybe if on a really steep hill....a "ya never know...just incase" thing. saying that... pretty much only on my mates drive as it's pretty damn steep and goes out onto a main road. his cars hand brake failed/slipped before and he just heard horns from outside, his car had rolled off the drive and about 20 yards down the road and was blocking the main road haha! xD

No, don't park in gear unless you're worried about your car rolling down a hill, in which case get your handbrake fixed. I suspect that's something that hasn't been needed for thirty or forty years unless you live up a mountain.

Having said that, I always depress the clutch and waggle the gearstick before I start the car to make sure it's out of gear.

I only leave it in gear if it's on a hill. But I always depress the clutch when starting a car regardless of whose car it is.

I always leave the car in gear. Force of habit now. I always put the clutch down regardless of who's car it is when I start it.

When I was learning I started my Mum's car in gear, once, never again. Also i'm sure I read some rubbish on here about always starting the car with the clutch in to spare your starter motor extra strain...

Anyhows, only on a hill.

Always park in gear, always put the clutch down to start. In fact, I think my CC requires the clutch to be depressed to start the engine.

always always always in gear! only about a third of the cars I have owned have had half decent handbrakes so it is second nature. not just that but disc brakes shrink if you park up when they are hot.

I always park in gear, and always dip the clutch when starting the engine. Less strain on the starter motor. Wife never parks in gear and doesn't always dip the clutch - we have the same issue as OP. ;)
