hi, ive had 2 of these cards msi and powercolor, both black screen with looping audio, the powercolor is going back on monday, but which 290 do i go for now? none reference? both cards were (are) reference. or do i say stuff it and go 780? dont really want to go that way as i was waiting for mantle. but at the same time im not happy having to rma my cards

Most of the custom cooled versions of the 290's are on the reference PCB and people still reporting black screens with them. If you are keen for Mantle, try your luck again.

See if any of the custom ones are equipped with better memory, this could help the black screen issue.

Have you tried upping the voltage a notch or two for the black screen issue? I read a post that core voltage on these Hawaii chips are helping with memory stability. Havant tried clocking my own further than +100mv but have manage half decent clocks. Obviously don't settle for a sketchy card but, you might get it working well enough to play a game or two on it this weekend.

Did you send the MSI back and it was confirmed faulty? Perhaps there is something else at fault in your system. When you say black screen with looping audio, in which game / program are you seeing this? Any overclocking done?

I'm beginning to wonder if a lot of these Black Screening 290's are actually caused by some external incompatibility.

PCIe-2 when PCIe-3 is needed?
PCIe 4x / 8x when 16x is needed?
Older Motherboard incompatibility?
and so on......

Seems a little strange if people are getting the same issue over and over again with replacement GPU's

my system is rock solid, the msi card was found to be faulty, bf4 black screen and looping audio = hard reset! then was fine for an hour or so then i tryd 3dmark the 1 with fire storm and black screen! then hard reset and was fine on a single run, im really stuck with which card to get next  i never had any problems with my 7870 and i sold that to upgrade! so my back up now is my very old gtx260.
maybe 3rd time lucky :p
i did try a 280x for about a month and that was solid too! my mb is sabretooth 990fx with the latest bios
