I've decided to start playing one of the Total War games, other than the first Rome and I need suggestions.
Rome II is a mess so it's out of the question and I'm not too keen on the setting of Shogun.

Which of the other Total War games is the best? What mods would I need for it (if any)?

Medieval 2 Total War Gold Edition
Stainless Steel mod to make it hugely improved and historic
Third Age Mod Its lord of the rings, seriously awesome.
 
If your after 1 or more titles might be worth waiting for a Steam or GMG sale for the Total War Grand Master Collection includes all the official games, expansions and dlc, often at least half price. Full price is £119.99.
 
Do mods for Medieval 2 get along with steam? Can I install the 3 you suggested without causing conflicts and with the ability to swap them at easily?

Yeah the fact you could man a chain gun an mow down infantry like blades of grass was strangely satisfying. Out of all the TW games Fall of the Samurai for was by far the most challenging (stock game with out mods).

I have to say I did enjoy Empire TW, people moaned and complained about the game like crazy when it first came out but I played some time but I found it to be a very polished and compelling game. I liked Medieval 2 as well but I preferred Empire as I don't have to worry about religion and keeping the Pope happy.
 
I loved Shogun 2, I got into it again last year and stayed up one night until 8am in the morning playing it! That doesn't happen very often. Fabulous game, very absorbing. And you've got ninjas. Come on, ninjas!
 
It pretty much depends on what period you are interested in.

They are all good games really (even Rome 2 is decent now they've patched it a decent amount).

Empire is very good with Darth-mod, excellent setting - great naval battles.
 
They're all a mess :(

Its swords or guns; if swords then shogun II. Guns leaves Nap or Empire. I only had Empire and the AI esppecially on the campaign map is laughable. Tried the mods and they never really helped.

From what I understand Nap's PvP is the best. Empire's is terrible and full of mortar camper noobs.

Get a complete gold edition collection and try them all.
 
So is the original Rome game not good, or is it just that you aren't interested as you have already finished it? I have it installed on Steam but haven't gotten around to playing it. In fact I haven't actually tried any of the other Total War games, although I did once spend some time trying to get the original Shogun to run on Windows 7 without success.

Rome is brilliant, I've played it since it came out, I just feel like it's time to.. well, move on. :)

I'll go with Medieval 2 and the suggested mods, thanks everyone.
