Tomb Raider coming to Xbox one and ps4

To begin with, let's address the differences between the two versions of the Definitive Edition on offer. PlayStation 4 users get a comfortably delivered 1080p presentation backed up with a post-process FXAA solution that has minimal impact on texture quality, sporting decent coverage across the scene, bar some shimmer around more finely detailed objects. Meanwhile the situation is more interesting on the Xbox One: the anti-aliasing solution remains unchanged, but we see the inclusion of what looks like a variable resolution framebuffer in some scenes, while some cut-scenes are rendered at a locked 900p, explaining the additional blur in some of our Xbox One screenshots. Curiously, the drop in resolution doesn't seem to occur during gameplay - it's only reserved for select cinematics - suggesting that keeping performance consistent during these sequences was a priority for Xbox One developer United Front Games.

For the most part the main graphical bells and whistles are lavished equally across both consoles, although intriguingly there are a few areas that do see Xbox One cutbacks. As demonstrated in our head-to-head video below (and in our vast Tomb Raider comparison gallery), alpha-based effects in certain areas give the appearance of rendering at half resolution - though other examples do look much cleaner. We also see a lower-quality depth of field in cut-scenes, and reduced levels of anisotropic filtering on artwork during gameplay. Curiously, there are also a few lower-resolution textures in places on Xbox One, but this seems to be down to a bug (perhaps on level of detail transitions) as opposed to a conscious downgrade.

Frame-rate

Our early look at performance revealed a startling gap between the next-gen platforms, with PS4 commanding a massive frame-rate advantage, while Xbox One even managed to drop below the 30fps mark under load. For the most part, on the PS4 we see frame-rates regularly fluctuating between 40-50fps depending on the complexity of the scene, with exploration in highly detailed areas with lots of effects responsible for the drop in performance. On the flipside, the game manages to hit 60fps pretty solidly in locations that have fewer effects at work, and in the more scripted action sequences where the rendering load is more predictable.

But despite the inconsistency in the PS4 experience, we still feel it's the preferable buy. During combat - a key element in the game - we see the Xbox One drop down to the mid 20s, with the PS4's higher frame-rate offering a clear advantage in both smoothness and response, despite the fluctuations - the bottom line is that the differences between 40-50fps on the PS4 are far less of an issue than, say, the 24-30fps drops incurred by the Xbox One.

Verdict

Overall, PlayStation 4 takes the lead where the next-gen consoles are concerned, with the higher quality effects work and higher frame-rates providing a preferable experience overall, particularly during heated combat, where the drops in performance are both felt and seen more heavily on the Xbox One. That said, as we pointed out in the performance analysis earlier this week, we would have liked an optional 30fps cap in the display settings to eliminate the judder during the frame-rate fluctuations and keep absolute consistency with controller response throughout.
 
I have never played this game and got the Digipack version at the same price as the normal version on PS4.

No brainer for me.

How much? :) I bet you can get the PS3 version for so much less, half or less. :)

It's a very good game but not one I'd play again or bother paying more for when it looks so good on old gen. It's about the gameplay right ;)
 
Looks like I wasn't imagining the difference in visual quality. I guess the dev had to make optimisations to enable XB1 to not dip too often in the low/mid 20's.

The developer said the assets used are identical and the only difference is the frame rate. ?

Not quite, it was a very political release imo as quite a few sources have observed differences in image quality now.

Square Enix said:
"Both Xbox One and PS4 gameplay run at native 1080p"

...but Xbox One 'cutscenes' are sometimes 900p.

Square Enix said:
"The assets from one platform to the other are the same as all source assets were shared 1:1 (textures, models, particles, etc.)."

The way I interpret this is they are basically saying that each platform developer got the same source files to work from, no mention of whether or not they were later downgraded.
 
Comparison talk is all getting a bit tiresome. If you've not played it before and decide to go for either next gen versions then you're in for a treat as it's an amazing game. I played the 360 version and thoroughly enjoyed my time with it (SP).

It's a brilliant game, my comparison would only be are you better off playing it for next to nothing on the 360, it looks awesome, runs lovely or paying a premium for a game that dips in framerate and a few extras. Again I have left out the graphics polish because we don't care about that, right (when it suits).

The MP will still be turd no matter which format you buy it on.
 
I got the PS4 version today and played it a bit tonight.. love it.. I finished it on the PS3 but I think that was long enough ago for this to still feel fresh. It looks great on the PS4 and coupled with the sound it it sucks you straight into the story.. I usually play games using my headset but I did notice that it utilises the little speaker on the controller which actually worked quite.

A pity I'm in work tomorrow but I look forward to playing this more on the weekend :)

I got the PS4 version today and played it a bit tonight.. love it.. I finished it on the PS3 but I think that was long enough ago for this to still feel fresh. It looks great on the PS4 and coupled with the sound it it sucks you straight into the story.. I usually play games using my headset but I did notice that it utilises the little speaker on the controller which actually worked quite.

A pity I'm in work tomorrow but I look forward to playing this more on the weekend :)

I picked mine up (for PS4) on the way to work this morning, should be back home by 11:00 to get stuck in.

It was only this week that I decided to get it for those reasons.. but at the end of the day it was one of my favorite games last year and this gives me an excuse to play it again..

The other reasons being that I never really played online with the PS3 as it was a laggy mess when in came out, I had a quick game on the PS4 last night and it was fine, actually quite fun! That together with all the DLC and extra tomb that I did not have with the PS3 version and it only cost me £25.10 :)

its his money, he can do as he pleases.. anyhow, the ps4 version is quite a leap graphically from the ps3 version, and next gen is all about graphics..

why do pc owners buy a new graphics card when there old one can play the same game at a low res, low textures and lower fps??

I'm getting my copy today for ps4, and I've played it through twice on pc already. but I love the game so would like to play it on my shinny new next gen games console.
 
Yeah I'd happily buy a game again for better graphics. Hell, I have Tomb Raider on the X360, but I never actually got round to playing it, which I'm chuffed about cos my PS4 copy turned up yesterday. The fact I have it on 360 as well doesn't bother me at all, I won't even sell it.

I've bought numerous games again on my gaming PC that I already owned on X360 just for that extra graphics boost. I am admittedly a bit of a graphics whore though, so that is prob why.
