Greenlizard0 Weekend Football Thread ** spoilers ** [1st - 4th February 2014]

He wouldn't have said that after a few years at Everton either. I'm sure Wenger though has said similar to defend a team not winning games.

I'm sure he has too, but I'm sure he doesn't say it after pretty much every single loss or instance of dropped points, especially against very weak sides who United should be beating comfortably. I'm not expecting Moyes to come out and blast the team game after game, but accepting a bit of responsibility instead of blaming it on everything else would be nice. Like Robbo said yesterday, Rome wasn't built in a day but some of it was, there has been virtually no improvement in the performances and we're now 24 league matches into the season. That's without mentioning him coming in and immediately jizzing £27,000,000 up the wall on a player who is mid table at best.

Personally I couldn't care less how badly Moyes is doing, he should be given until the end of the season but some of the defenses of him in here have just been odd considering the team has shown virtually no improvement under him whatsoever. If United were even attempting to play decent football while still losing that would at least be something.

I never expected us to win the league, but i thought the very least Moyes could do was get us in the Champions League ( predicted a 3rd or 4th place finish).

This was my expectation, too.
If Mourinho were hired, his brief would've probably been a top 2 finish.
Moyes isn't as good, so he was probably told top 4 finish.

I was very disappointed in the Summer. Not because we were getting a manager who hasn't won anything of note. But because Mourinho, who I regard as the best manager in the World, did not join us. To add insult to injury, he went to our rivals which makes our job doubly difficult, if we want to win the title.

Given the amount of money riding on this (I think the Glazers have £390M of debt), will they be willing to risk Moyes, when there are many top class European managers who will be more than willing to come to Utd, in the Summer?

There has been some improvement.
6 months ago, he was eyeing up Everton players and making silly bids (£30M odd, for Fabregas) on other players.
At least now, he is thinking bigger and isnt attempting to buy any players from Everton. He is also being more realistic in his bidding.

Also, yesterday, after we were 2-1 down, we were attacking like mad...which is similar to the Utd of old. Of course, technically we weren't great, but I will blame that on the heavy rain/wind.

Now, the Sunderland game, when we were defending a 1 goal advantage AT OLD TRAFFORD, against a team who are near the bottom of the league. That is unforgivable. We should've been putting 4 or 5 goals past them.

We've got a Champions League game coming up, so lets see how he does there. Technically, our team will have to be excellent, if we want to win those games.

Liverpool team vs West Brom: Mignolet, Flanagan, Toure, Skrtel, Cissokho, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho, Suarez, Sturridge

Seems sensible enough...

The biggest problem, as I see it, is that air about them is gone.

Not only is the 'if we play long enough they'll beat us' mentality no longer evident in opposition, but actually the opposition look like they can take them in every game.

I think that's the biggest issue now.

Glad that flanno has come back this year a calmer player does better for it when he first appeared he was far too rash but seems to come on well, we really need to get going quick today west brom last couple seasons seems to be a team we consistently under estimate I know there form is poor but we can't let our players assume be easy well they best not anyway

Look at the Man Utd website and Twitter, it's full of quotes from the manager and the players, complaining about luck and saying we "should have won". It's a shambles, there's a defeatist mentality here now I'm afraid.

The positivity doesn't take much to turn around, just look at the lack of faith in wenger last year. He was a washed up old hack, now look at him. The faith is restored in all but a few.

The players he has doesn't suit him and he can't get that to work, that much is obvious. All they need to decide now is if they give him the money to build his own side or cut him loose. The fans clearly have lost faith, don't want him or didn't want him in the first place. Mata is a great signing, Fellaini is not.

You might as well cut your losses with Moyes and give a new man a few months to set his targets.

If the team that won the Premiership the season before doesn't suit the new manager then the wrong manager is in charge, it's as simple as that. You could argue that both Chelsea and City were far stronger last season and just needed the right man for the job, which both now have, so a drop is to be expected but from 1st to 7th?

United should've sent him back to Everton under the distance selling regulations in the first week they had him so whoever chose him in the first place then decided to keep him is as much, if not more, to blame than Moyes himself.

I don't think the situation can be compared to Wenger at Arsenal. Wenger has won things in the past and I think the fans just needed something to cheer them up, that was Mesut Ozil. I don't think they'll be too pleased if Arsenal collapse now and come 3rd/4th. They're essentially in the same boat as last season if that happens. Wenger is a legend at Arsenal, Moyes isn't anything like that for us.

Does this mean he can only play one way then? His style at Everton was pretty defensive, and as admitted by all - pretty dull. What kind of players would he want?

Once it became clear he wasn't bringing in 5/6 new players, he should have pretty rapidly drawn up a new plan, one that gets the best out of the current squad he has. After all, it isn't that bad. It can at least challenge for 4th place, easily.

It seems his future or 'vision' now relies on him and the Man Utd board pulling off a few top class signings in the summer. Am I confident of that? No.
