How do you choose your graphics settings for each game?

I'm going to be buying 280X as soon as one comes on offer again and in the meantime I thought i'd find out how you guys determine your settings from one game to another.

If we decide that our process will be to set everything to Ultra and then start scaling things back until we reach an acceptable FPS average which settings do we look to alter and why?

Thanks

p.s Sorry if this should be in the gaming forum

yep i bang the settings on max and see how it goes, the only setting i ever need to drop is aa but as im using 1400p its no big deal

Set almost everything to maximum (I don't like motion blur much), and if I need to drop something down it'll nearly always only be AA. There are rare circumstances where a demanding mod like Misery 2.1 required me to turn off SSAO / reduce shadow quality (damn x-ray engine).

set everthing to max or ultra and if it doesnt play fine its time for an upgrade :) saving that only one I touch is AA

I just Set everything to max apart from the AA settings and then work down from there

Plus every game and every person is different for what settings you want to change..;)

adjust settings till it runs smooth in a few games not many:D on my 7850 but mostly on max

7970 set to max settings apart from aa again depends on game, some I can max aa without any slowdown

Turn off motion blur and depth of field and enable MSAA.

Set everything else to high and lower what's needed to achieve 60fps minimum

Set everything max. Turn motion blur off and play. If have to lower AA first but generally don't have to

I play everything on ultra with my card, coz if I want to play games with sub standard quality I would buy a console, I'm sure your 280x can cope ultra mode, I'm using the 290

When I had my 6970's I used to set things normally at high without much AA. Coped with most things with decent frame rate that way.

Now with 290's it tends to be just slam it at max, at least if it supports crossfire :p Even one card is crazy fast compared to my old setup.

I let Geforce Experience deal with it, except for BF4 and DayZ, I bump the settings down for them, rather smooth running than eye candy for those games.
