If he didn't know the risks of heroin or whatever he was on he's an idiot. If he knew them and still took it he's an idiot. Idiot is quite appropriate to be honest.

Am I harsh in thinking that although his death is sad, he is a complete tool for taking drugs with 3 young children?

If having three young kids and a successful career is not enough of a kick up the backside for you to quit and stay off drugs, then I don't think you ever have any hope.
