Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at 46

I would completely disagree, like others have said that you have at least try the drug once to get addicted, which to me means that it is their fault.

A kinda agree with this, but the taking of drugs could be for loads of reasons.

I still think that if addicts want help they should be given it ASAP. Rehabilitation is the key

Yep, too true.

People know it's wrong but think that they are too awesome to get addicted or that they know better and they shouldn't have to obey laws.

You stick a needle in your arm containing chemicals supplied by criminals and you die. You've committed suicide.

right, and no one has ever made mistakes ? point is you don't choose to become an addict, the only people who would claim you do are people who have never suffered from addiction.

you don't know the circumstances which led to him originally trying heroin, people with zero knowledge of addiction are always so keen to pass judgement.

its one of things that grates on me the most along with people who moan about how people who commit suicide are selfish and don't think of others.... as if they expect someone who is suicidal to have the same rational thought process as a normal person.

He was a fantastic actor, but strangely other than Boogie Nights I didnt really enjoy many of his films or the characters he portrayed, terrible age to go though, guess the demons were with him.

But you do choose to use something which has a high probability of addiction...

In most cases that person knowing full well the likely outcome of their actions sticks that needle in their arm.

He was a good actor, but it's just a shame he's died of a drug overdose. I don't feel much sympathy for him as it was his own fault

Dead people don't require any sympathy, they are dead and will be unaware of your views. I do however sympathise with his family, it will be a terrible feeling to lose a son, husband or a partner.

Why do people choose to commit suicide, or murder their spouses?

Some people just have very deep seated issues, and you (and many others passing judgement) have not even the vaguest concept of what goes on in such people's minds.

Of course I don't know why he started using, but I do know that it was his choice. You can't blame anyone else for his actions. Also most non addicts have no sympathy because they probably wouldn't do hard drugs in the first case.

Clueless post of the week goes to you sir

It's not a conscious choice to become addicted...

I've smoked on nights out before, but i've never felt the need to smoke regularly. Some people smoke and get addicted and struggle to quit. Similarly i can drink on a night out and then go weeks without drinking, some people need to drink daily to not break down mentally. Generally the reasons for addiction are totally circumstantial or because they're going through bad times and need a method of coping, or sometimes it's in your genes.

Blaming addicts for being addicted to a substance is just wrong on so many levels. It helps nobody.

It's a reaction like yours which actually stops people from getting help because they feel ashamed of their addiction and scared to speak out about it. Addiction is a disease, not a choice.

Well in that case how did he get this disease? Was it from a rat bite or a faulty gene? No he gave HIMSELF that disease out of choice which is my point.

How do you know I don't have the vaguest concept of it?

Tell me please. I'd love to know how you know what I have and haven't experienced in my life.

Messed around with substances he shouldn't of, a real pity that even seemingly intelligent people can make some truly woeful life choices.

We don't know his state of mind. It's easy to think that being rich and famous doing something he loves means he is happy (and for the vast majority that's true) but we don't know.

Drug addiction is often a sympotm of other, deeper mental health problems. Depression obviously being the most common but the depression itself can be a symptom of other psychological issues.

Because if you did, you wouldn't be so dismissive and quick to pass your almighty judgement on someone else whose life you know nothing about.

(Ironic huh?)
