your internet story

Good times.

First home internet was 2001 on BT dial-up, then one year later on 512Mbit Broadband (BT again)

Yahoo chat rooms were crazy back then and you could talk about all sorts of depraved stuff back then. There was even a voice chat through yahoo and i got some young US woman to admit she liked anal and would normally let the guy do that to her on a first date :D The internet was really like the Wild West in those days. Before that i was on Uni internet since 1995. MTV was the best website back then with there music videos which were basically dancing postage stamps

BBC Micro model B at primary school. Was the only kid who could use it thanks to my grandad who fostered my passion for IT really early on. Had an Atari STE, Amiga 1200, Commodore 64. Used to play with the word processing microchip and daughter boards with a mega amount of memory. Got into trouble once for something, I think involving the school telephone line and for opening it up with the screwdriver.

Used to play a game called Prince (early strategy-can't find it anymore) :( and 9 Lives on the Atari STE, Overlord (Supremacy) on the Amiga and this alterego (create your own life) on commodore 64 from memory, little computer people too! Oh and this drunken game to, something thing night out. Andy (something)? Walk your way home from the pub, so much fun! Ahh memories.

I first got online at home sometime in early 2000 (dated because I picked up a BT CD on a trip to the Millennium Dome sometime before I did my GCSEs), I actually got online on a Sunday evening while waiting for a WWF PPV. The very first thing I did was download an MP3 of Beck - Loser.

The next weekend I stayed online all one night in some random Yahoo chatroom with a mate from about 2 streets away. The first month I cost my parents about £300 in charges because being a noob I didn't realise I had to use a different dialer to get free access off peak.

The early part of my internet use consisted mainly of downloading music, pranking various mates with spoof emails etc., and the usual things a teenage boy looks at...;)

I went to live at Uni for a year in 2002 and upgraded to NTL broadband when I came home in 2003. Stayed with them until 2008 when I moved into my own place, periodically getting my speed upgraded.

I've actually gone backward in my own home because my ADSL connection speed is beyond terrible.

Yup, I remember the self-pleasure room vividly.

One of my friends picked up some crazy-arse sex partner off the BDSM room and dated her for a while before dropping her like a sack of hot ****.

Back in 2006 4chan and the like really WERE something to be reckoned with [in an online sense anyway]. Now when you go to /b/ you see people telling others off for being 'immoral' or 'unfair' and threads like, "describe your feels when you're on your bed watching TV with your wife and kids, great times". Seriously, it makes me want to be sick.

There's still some out-there stuff on /b/ but it used to be no go area back then due to the all the CP stuff. There should be line that should't be cross TBH. /b/ is the absolute limit to what i would deem ok to be on the net. I don't venture there too often anyway, never had. Back then i only used 4chan for the high-res board because it was a good place to pick up some quality wallpapers

The authorities used this fact to their advantage by seizing the servers and archiving every thread since about 2008-2010 I think. I linked to the 'reveal' post in another thread, I think it was the one about the NSA.

yes i saw that so thank god i only used the high-res board during that time, in the last few weeks i did venture to others but since your post i've been careful and not go into the ones with all the porn in them. I've kept to the SFW ones even when at home

Ah 300/1200 baud dial-up.

The good old days of Colossal Cave Adventure, Super Star Trek. :D

Same here. I think I took the modem from work and went into some BBS boards initially. 9600 was a revelation..can things get any faster I thought lol.

My first bit of gaming was playing Colossal Cave on an £80k ICL mini back in 1982, when I first started as a mainframe operator. Great times.

I wouldn't worry about that. They only go after the uploaders of the dodgy stuff. There's a "report post" button for things like that if the mods miss them.

There was some guy here on OCUK who said he was once a /b/ moderator. He lasted there about two weeks because he couldn't take it. I don't blame him.

Wow, lots of tales here, gues ill add mine:-

Started off when my techwhore of a big brother bought me and my middle brother a computer each and created our house network, there the first thing he showed us was Manga chat rooms, which were fun.

After that I moved onto playing planetarion web based game while i was at school, which is about 13-4 years ago now! jesus.
Joined a powerful alliance in that [FURY] and then joined their IRC channel as a demi admin.

after planetarion petered out a bit i got onto Tribes 2 where I spent about 4 years playing on the euro Ladder, starting off at DHC which had a notoriously bad tempered leader, then moving to Hades and iL.

after classic killed T2 i then got addicted to WoW for a few (6) years after this I just bummed around from place to place

Found OCUK because i was upgrading my celeron to play tribes 2 and I was led here, was a long time lurker havent left since.

edit, 666 number of the beaast!
