mavity (2013)

After seeing the film I'd have to say its USP is the very good VFX, as far as the story goes there isn't much to it - it's basically held together from beginning to end by the great visuals.

Some background on how Framestore produced the effects here.

I watched this in Imax a few weeks ago and thought the first hour or so was great, after that I found my mind starting to wander.

Whether it was the huge glasses starting to annoy me or something else but I found it hard to get back into the film after that.

Her being on-screen relatively solo for a large proportion and holding attention, plus acting in an entirely green screen and challenging environment, definitely worth a nomination imo.

Agreed. Her performance was stunning. I'm not saying she should win it but definitely worth a nomination.

Blindside is very moving, I need to watch it again actually as I saw it on initial release only.

Anyhow, now that you've all seen mavity, check this out.

With the amount of money they spent on this small clip I am not sure if it was worth it in the long run..

Watched this the other night and agree that visually it is stunning and to my surprise Sandra Bullocks performance was very good!

However, I really struggled with Hollywoods stamp on space and their insistence on blowing everything up. Plus the amount of times Bullock would have died in real life annoyed me. Just couldn't get over that side of it and that ruined it for me.

Just started watching this without knowing anything about it, so far 30 mins in and nothings happened.

The reviews on imdb are either "this is the best movie of the year" or "worst movie I've ever seen". Is this going to be one of those movies like The Godfather that people say is amazing purely to trick you into wasting 90 minutes in pure boredom ?

30 minutes in and nothing happening? Are you running it at half speed?

Stuffs obviously happening, just nothing mildly entertaining. It's like watching Apollo 13 all over again, at least when we got bored in the cinema we entertained our selves by trying to stick Galaxy Minstrels to the screen lol

Three questions:-

1) How are you watching this? It's not released on DVD/Bluray for another month surely?

2) Nothing happens in the first 30 mins? Are you serious? Maybe you skipped past the first 17 minute NON-STOP take?

3) How is it like Apollo 13 (which in itself is a fantastic film of course)? Apollo 13 is a slow paced historical docu-drama, where as mavity is more a roller coaster action flick?

Are you sure you're not watching some hokey copy which is just 90mins of the back of someone's head?

Is this worth watching in 2d then?

I'd also say no. For 2D, it's not a great story and it's not going to be an easy watch.

It's all about the showcase of the most modern 3d visual techniques with a tribute to old camera techniques, styles and direction.

And AVATAR is a great story?

In my opinion, No.

Not great visually either, neither am I a big James Cameron fan.

Edit: I should say (as I have earlier in the thread (the night i saw it)), although my opinion above seemed negative, I loved mavity.
