deciding between the r9 290 gaming edition or gigabyte windforce 780. want to spend max 380 so any others are out of the questions and want this card to last me 3 years atleast (in term of been able to play atleast high setting). the game i play most is battlefield 4 and dota 2 but do play others time to time.

Want the card to be quite as well my previous 290 was a reference and was too loud.

Edit: i play at 1920 x 1200p

the 290 is better then the 780

i have a MSI 290 gaming edition clocked it at 1100mhz gpu - 1400mhz memory

i have been playing battlefield 4 on ultra settings at 1080p smooth as butter :D

Both are good cards.

Some games the 290 performs better some the 780 do.

Ati have mantle, nvdia have some features and gsync coming.

Basically comes down to what features you might use, price and benchmarks in the games you play.

Bottom line is both are good and will serve you well.

Based on your requirements id go with the 290, but either card would be fine. With your main game being BF4, picking an AMD card that can use Mantle once its matured makes a lot of sense. You also have an extra gb of vram, should you ever need it. The MSI 290 is very quiet as well.

If you want quiet the 780 + WF3 cooler is the better bet - and handles BF4 on ultra at 1920x1080 no hassle. (If quiet is a really big deal for you then the WF3 cooler has enough headroom you can practically all but turn the fan off with the 780 while keeping temps under 80C).

Both cards perform very similarly but there's potential in BF4 for the 290 to be considerably faster if/when they get Mantle running faster. If you play this more, then I would look towards this.

Even if Mantle is unstable you can always game in DX11 and get comparable performance to the 780.

780. Purely as AMD are touting that Mantle will be an open standard, so therefore you can have Mantle (at some stage possibly) and all the nVidia proprietary tech as well :)

Mantle isn't enough of an incentive to make the AMD cards worthwhile over the comp by itself... Yet..

That aside, it's pretty close in terms of performance, the 780 has lower power use, lot's of features already supported, and new ones coming soon.. G-Sync etc. The 290 has more vram..

Maybe a toss a coin? Heads = AMD, Tails = Nvidia..

Proper LOL at gregster and the suarez gif.

As others have said, if you play lots of BF4 it's 290 im afraid.

tbh buy whichever is cheaper both great cards will do the same job, if you prefer either Camp over the other then go for that , basicaly same results from either card overall

Why not the Sapphire Tri-X 290 which is £10 more than the Gigabyte 780 atm but due to weekly sale. The Tri-x runs quiet and cool imo. In BF multiplayer My 290X (yes x version) not seen it go any higher than 74degrees in my rig on stock clocks (1040mhz core) and fans never went higher than 40%. But on average it runs cooler just never seen it go higher than that. Also this 290 runs faster than the 780 so I can't see why you would want a 780 especially when you get mantle as well with BF4.

With the Mantle argument it does depend on if you'll still be playing BF4 by the time they get Mantle working well for it.
If you want to watch the Star Swarm demo then it's definately the 290 that you'll want! :D

Both cards are good though, if it was me I'd probably get the 290. Other people also seem quite excited by the idea of TrueAudio and AMD will have FreeSync (or whatever LtMatt tells them to call it) as soon as it's becomes part of the VESA standard and everyone adopts it.

Plus if Nvidia introduces 2 new cards soon (Titan Black and 790) then it just pushes the 780 further down the range and may impact resale value. AMD may release a dual GPU card quite a bit further down the line and once 290/290X sales slow they'll probably do a new version like the 7970GHz Editions to get a few more sales, but I don't imagine their line up changing too much.

Also, I didn't like my WindForce 3X GTX 670 cards that much, so not a big fan of the WindForce range now.

I still see people talking and playing BF3 on here so I think if your into FPS then your likely to play it for a while especially as it starts to go from alpha > beta > release standards by the end of 2014 :p
