GS5 to launch in January

However I don't see an issue with them developing screens with a higher PPI despite them not being strictly necessary with regards to phone displays, as it's all about technological progress, this is where the sort of screens that end up in future versions of Occulus Rifts start out

I disagree, implementing higher ppi displays in situations that don't benefit anyone and are constrained by very limited power source is just purely wasteful.

It's done for simple marketing power.

The fact that you can get 440ppi in a 5" phone already suggests that 440ppi could be done on a 7" or a 10" display.

I doubt we'll see small RGB oled screens again any time soon, there's no point. the s4 used the diamond pentile layout due the the different inefficiencies of the blue, red and green sub pixels. Also remember the diamond pentile uses 2 sub pixels per pixel rather than RGB's 3, so 1/3rd less subpixels. just a 5" RGB screen alone would increase the subpixel count by 1/3rd over the s4's and for no real conceivable difference, well..other than even worse power efficiency - the current diamond layout is used for a reason.

I cant see the point in in going any higher with pixel density at all. I said this back when people complained about the s4's 1080p screen - it's comfortably above the threshhold. Concentrate on power efficiency and colour accuracy please!.

It's noticeable on the S4's panel, not hugely of course, but it was there. It's more the increase in black space than the lack of sub pixels that is the most noticeable aspect.

The increase in black space.... ?? you cant see that unless you're taking photos of it.

Shock! A iOS7 inspired change :D

Can't wait to see the 'bezel-free' design. Hopefully the screen will curve around the edges!

Which means 3840x2160 at 7" is quite viable if 5" 2560x1440 screens are already being produced.

Cameras already use 2500+ PPI OLED viewfinders. It's just a question of yields on larger panels.

I'm looking forward to this, I think, anyway...

TouchWiz in principle is good and works well, but needs some tweaking and a definite graphical overhaul. The leaked pictures look a bit Symbian-esque.

It'd be nice if they produced some sort of machined metal design but there's no chance of that realistically.

Doesn't matter what the specs are, if it ships with knox I'll be buying something else.

I need root, but i'm not going to buy a device where rooting voids my warranty, I know flashing and rooting technically void your warranty but before knox it's been possible to return the device to a stock state with no signs of modification.

Is Knox some sort of locking condition that Samsung have introduced?

Yep, it's part of their new security drive so that more businesses and government organisations start using them as they can be locked down.

I still find it noticeable enough on certain colours, which is what I meant with regards to the increased black space.

For example, reds, half the area of reds will only be lit up by pixels, which makes it quite noticeable to me. I find them nice to look at of course, just preferable if it wasn't there, and certain shapes and colours can be noticeably less sharp than other colours and shapes.

Of course, but it's always been an issue of getting such density on larger displays. They have to do it someway by putting them in to consumer products.

I find it odd people bang on about the amoled screens being too vibrant. That's stupid. It's like saying Holly Willabooby breasts are too much. Rich & Vibrant please thanks and keep the frigging home button arrangements.

They aren't "too" vibrant, but the saturation is very high on them meaning colours can look unnatural, however there are settings available to choose a lower saturation setting to get colours to look more natural.

If colours look unnatural then simply use one of the less saturated display modes. *Edit, could have sworn your mention of the modes wasn't there before!

I'd say Movie mode is more colour accurate than the Professional Photo mode which has a bit more saturation.

I have to say I did compare my GS4's various AMOLED settings/modes with my iPhone 5 (which is pretty much bang on for colours). You can get them very, very close, so the old argument doesn't really hold much weight now.

Samsung do need to update their icons, they looks seriously dated.

However this makes me think, if the Kit Kat update is basically on the verge of coming out for the S4, and the S5 is comeing out with a new TW UI, what is going to happen to the S4, becuase I'm guessing the new TW UI is not included in the Kit Kat rom soon to launch.

In general love for previous gen phones dwains immediately after the latest model is released. Anyone hoping for anything different this time round will hope in vain. My previous post about colours wasn't me moaning, I just find it VERY annoying virtually every review/reviewer banging on about unnatural colours. It's a phone . Amoled is what it is. Vibrant and sexy. Long live amoled.

Additionally owning a S1,S2,S3 and then a S4 one assumes I love Samsung. Wrong. Touchwiz especially on the S4 is hideously bloated. Touchwiz should die a painful death and please for the love of god, let the S5 be light on this front. My next phone will not be a Samsung. Nexus devices are my new thing but I do hope the S5 rocks
