*** The Official Microsoft Surface Thread ***

does anyone know of anywhere that is selling the updated CPU version? I would like to get one of these but don't really want to end up with the slower/older cpu.

there's currently a deal in US for Surface 1 refurb for 169 bucks + touchcover for 39 bucks

I can have it shipped for about 50, making it just below 260 USD which is 155 quid.

worth it or not? don't care about lack of apps, only things needed are office and web browser.

I ended up buying 2 with 2 new black touchcovers. (had to use 2nd ebay account as there's limit 1 for each customer)

if I don't like them (I actually do, HW-wise) I can always put them on bay and won't lose anything.

they've sold 500 units in like 20 minutes. 1000 in the last hour O_O

TBH I doubt you will notice any real difference between the 2 unless you want features like VT-D for VMs.

I would suspect the MS store would be the most likely place but I honestly don't know.

How to tell Xbox movies, Xbox music etc to save to sd.

All the guides are for win8 not 8.1 I thought they made it easier.
I just went to desktop, file explore, properties, location tab and changed it to D. But the apps don't recognise any of the files there, just says nothing threw. If I go to file explorer I can double click the files AMD it launches in the right app, but does save info like where you are at.

This need fixing in the next update. It mould be as easy as opening up Xbox videos, charms bar, settings choose where to store files.

Edit - sorted it. Its terrible and needs overhauling. How they expect someone to know what's going on. That is a rubbish system.

It downloads the file to the hidden app folder in c users. Before putting it where ever the folder is. so you still need ~6gb spare on c:\ drive. I also fond out why 10gb on c also disappeared, had two partially downloaded film files in there, which should have been deleted automatically when the download failed/cancelled.

So sorted now, well as much as it can be.

I've just won one of these on ebay, the 256gb/8GB version, looking forward to getting it on tuesday, has anyone hooke theirs up to an external monitor? I have a minidisplayport on my ZR30W so I will try it out at 2560x1600, be interesting to see what its like.

can you recommend (and link) any cheap, but not awful, wallet style case?

like Snugg Microsoft Surface Leather Wallet Case from rainforest, just cheaper.

30 seems a bit steep, when I bought the surface and touchcover for 155.

Had a look on bay, but all seem to be the folding cases, which I don't want.

I've been into John Lewis today to get a replacement Note 10.1 2014 as my original one was faulty and been having a play with the surface 2 and pro 2 which got me thinking.

They have the original Surface Pro 128GB that they will price match down to £499 which seems like a very good deal and I just wondered what peoples thoughts were on it? It will primarily be used as a tablet as I have a 2013 Macbook Air for laptop type stuff so its more for on the move for watching films and quick email updates etc.

I had the RT then the Pro now the Pro 2, the main thing thats lacking on the original Pro is battery life and IMHO the extra RAM.
If you are going to use it as a tablet for movies and emails then I dont think it'll be fit due to the lack of battery life and even thought i have the Pro2 I tend to use my Pro2 for desktop replacement and I have an iPad Mini for the other stuff and dont tend to use my Pro2 when I'm at home anymore since I got the Mini, if they do a Surface Mini though I'll be all over that if its full fat Win8.1 and still has decent speed.. The Pro is more an UltraTab, works as a laptop replacement IMHO than a tablet, if you already have a laptop and you're not thinking of replacing it then the Pro isnt for you, if you didnt have the MBA and were looking for something then I'd say yes but having a decent laptop and wanting a tablet the Pro will disapoint and IMHO you would be better off getting something else to do basic email and watching stuff, unless of course you want to do all of your watching close to a power socket or be limited on what you can watch, oh, and theres the weight to think of as well..

Has anyone in the UK purchased a Surface Pro 2 recently and received the i5-4300U processor rather than the i5-4200U processor? If so, please could you confirm the capacity (128GB/256GB/etc) and the Lot Number listed on the side of the box?

The thing with the Pro is that the battery life, thickness, weight and price are much worse than something like the Surface 2. And the only way thats worth putting up with is if you use it for things the Surface 2 can't do e.g. drawing with the pen, using desktop apps, etc. So unless your going to do a lot more than just movies, email, internet etc., you'd be better off with something else IMO.

That said I am very tempted by the offer MS have on at the moment. Pro 1 64GB with £10 store credit and cyan touch cover for £479. Hmmmm.

Well I got the surface pro from John Lewis on the basis that if I don't like it it can go back. Also got the type cover 2 but thats not been out the box yet...

So far I like the thing, its not that heavy has a good screen and is stupidly fast, the browser obliterates anything I've used on an iPad or Android tablet. Its good at watching movies and having 128GB SSD and then the MicroSD as well is nice. My only complaints so far is it gets quite warm and the battery life which looks like it'll be somewhere between 4-5 hours for what I use, which in the grander scale of things isn't bad as I rarely do anything that needs charge much beyond that and I will always have the charger with me.

Does anybody know if the is a psx emulator for win8/rt

There's not, and there won't be unless Microsoft change stuff otherwise it'd be slow (Like the one on Windows Phone 8 isn't fast, because of this limitation, and yet you've had people emulating PS1 on flipping single core 1GHZ snapdragon chips for years on Android, say the Xperia Play)

For Win 8, any old X86 one will work.

To answer my own question, just picked up a 256GB version from JL and it's Lot Number 1403 (3rd week of 2014) and I can confirm that this has the updated i5-4300U processor in it.

Battery life is a deal breaker. for me it has to last 8hours because i would use it when i am in long distance flights/transport.

That is no good imo

Depends what you are doing but yeah for you the battery is the deal breaker, wasnt so bad for me, I would use it all day in the office plugged in, and then get a few hours out of it at home before it died, the Pro2 is leagues ahead when it comes to battery life, plus it has teh 8Gb of RAM and bigger SSD which just makes it sooo much more usable..
