spec me a harddrive ~ 3TB

My original 1TB harddrive died and now my other one is on the way out, it's making a horrible squeaking noise.

So gonna get a bigger harddrive and partition but not sure what to go for.

I want to spend as little as possible but something of quality.

I always go for Seagate Barracudas, as they are cheap fast and quiet.

Is this going to be your boot drive, or just used for storage? The WD black/green drives are worth considering too.

You may have just been unlucky with having 2 disks failing, or it could be something systematic causing the failures such as overheating. Worth checking before you put a new one in.

Storage.

I'm pretty sure the 1Tb one broke because I kind of dropped my pc on it's front (where the harddrive sits)

The other one is at least 10 years old, so I think it's time!

I don't think it's overheating, I've got a intake fan blowing through the harddrives on my zalman z9 plus

How about the 3tb 64mb 7200rpm, Toshiba ones? Usually just below 80 notes

Western Digital is the best choice in my opinion.

I can understand Black drives for their warranty, but their speed? Usually those sized drives are going to be storing media, where speed isn't an issue.

Not really, media storage is better suited for Red drives.

A black drive is currently a perfect solution for Steam in my opinion, with the new revision boasting 170mb/s read and write speeds which will offer great performance.

As the OP didn't stipulate what the use of the drive was for i was giving the best option for each scenario.

I would avoid anything made by Seagate like the plague.

The have the highest drive failure rate out of all of the drive manufacturers.

Well, I have 2 of their sshd's they both are long after warranty period, no failures at all.
Depends how your system looks like. If its clean and well ventilated, disk will survive long, like mine.

I am not saying there aren't Seagate drives out there that last, what I am saying is that Seagate have the highest failure rate and by some margin.

I work at a huge data centre and although it might not be a fair statistic for some reason, as far as faulty hard drives go Seagates are easily in first place numbers wise.

EDIT - just logged the 4767th and 4768th faulty hard drive on the current system we have. Both Seagate.
