Employer threatening to ban e-cigs...

"It stinks, they should vape outside."
"Bloody smokers and vapers, always getting free breaks outside and being unproductive."

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

well no, if they took the "don't" option and didn't smoke or vape they wouldn't be dammed at all.

It's more "damned if you **** off to indulge your habit regardless of what it is".

just like i'd be annoyed if a chronic masturbater got extra Fap breaks....of course that would certainly be preferable to him doing it at his desk.

I figured someone would take this angle. :p

You know what I mean though, but by the same token of me not expecting people to stop drinking coffee because I don't like the smell, or people to stop listening to crappy radio stations because I don't like the music, vaping is way a lesser of 2 evils, and the root evil isn't just easy to say "lolquitting!" to.

The fact that people don't reek of smoke on their clothes is a plus enough for me!

I don't like ecigs and don't want to be around people with ecigs.

Well then your irrational point of view should trump everyone else's then.

This pretty much sums the whole thing up for me.

Why on earth do people get away with forcing their views on other people?? if there was a genuine reason other than 'i don't like it' then i could understand.

I'm a non smoker but i have no interest in stopping anyone else from vapping or smoking.

Because it smells nasty.

And vapers come across as smug *****.

Your first point is valid. The second is painfully subjective.

I want to ban ugly/fat people from the work place because I don't like how they look.

I want to ban certain people from speaking because their voice annoys me.

My personal pros to e-cigs:

Walking behind someone vaping isn't horrible like walking behind someone smoking.
As above for waiting at bus-stops or walking out of buildings.
They don't linger-stink, or make you stink.
Their homes don't smell rank like that of smokers.
No passive harm.
Severely reduced primary harm (if any).
The dancefloors in clubs don't sporadically empty as half the punters go outside for a fag.

Cons:

Some people think it looks stupid, unprofessional or attention seeking.
Some vapours smell a bit.

So the pros are a nice mix of factual and subjective, whilst the cons are purely subjective.

BAN THEMS!!!

Is that not a bit selfish?

there is a bloke in my office that smells nasty, should we introduce a policy to get rid of him too?

i actually doubt you having been around many vappers anyway as on the whole the smell is often pleasant smelling like apple and vanilla etc.

The first point is no more valid either. "It smells nasty" is a blanket statement. It = Vapour. Full stop.

My wife would disagree heartily any time she catches a whiff of one of my Mint or sweet flavours. I've been banned from using Snake Oil in her car, though, as the sweetness mixed with aniseed is too much for her. She has never smoked, and loathed when I did.

If standing up to ill-informed, spasmodically jerking knees and ignorant subjectivity given as fact is 'smug', then I'm afraid I must have become that which I hate. God forgive me.

No, they should just go on their actual breaks.

Absolutely.

If you're so enthralled in getting nicotine that you just can't wait a little longer in between so you're not causing issues for yourself or your employer, then you need to stand back and take a good hard look at reality.

It never ceases to amaze me the efforts smokers go through to justify basically giving them selves and others cancer.

Science has all the evidence you need to show that you will probably die from smoking, yet smoking continues.

It really goes to show how stupid some people really are.

Just doing our bit to help with the looming pension crisis. No need to thank us

My missus' workplace has now banned all cigarette/electric cigarette breaks. You now do it on your lunch break and off company premises.

Non-smokers were getting fed up that smokers/electric fag users got extra breaks during the day and started asking for the same privilege - management said nope, breaks for none in that case.

Fairness for all.

Can you just explain the reasoning behind why you do it?

I mean you know it really damages you, you know you will most likely get cancer from it, its bloody expensive....

I just see absolutely no reason why anyone would choose to do it.

Because smokers obviously can't be thinking about work or talking to customers while smoking  If somebody isn't 100% committed to their work they will find ways to waste time, or at least not seize every opportunity to work, whether they smoke or not.

If you reasoned it through and were risk-averse you probably would decide not to smoke. I think it's about each person's understanding of the risks and their understanding of and relationship with risk. What are good odds ? What is at stake ? Are people even asking themselves these questions ?
