John Carmack Says to Take Nvidia's K1 Claims with Several Grains of Salt

He is old lol but then again he's always been very pro nvidia so it was interesting to see his comments. Nonetheless its hardly worth anyone getting too upset over this thread, its only a mobile gpu after all.

Who said he has to agree with everything Nvidia said. Certainly not i. My post's were all to do with why the Journalist is shocked at Carmack's words.

One more time and it's in the article. He's shocked because Carmack has been so pro Nvidia. There will be other's here that are shocked because he has seemed Pro Nvidia. Hope that help's as i am not going round in circle's for another 20 pages.

He's more than likely right even to laymen that chart looks stodge.

For instance the way they've displayed the PS3s Cell Processor doesn't really reflect it's ability. That is more than likely what he is referring to as Carmack has aways praised just how good a CPU it is.
 
Looking at the chart it's the cpu that sticks out. Xbox did have a better gpu from what i have read but not by much. The ps3's cell processor was what gave it the edge. You could see this when playing ps3 only games like Uncharted and The last of us. These games looked better than anything the xbox360 managed.

If Nvidia can pull all that off on 5w i would be really impressed but like Carmack i am skeptical.

Well I have no intention of swapping out my 3930K and SLI Titans for this Tegra chip and Carmack is probably right but I wouldn't mind having one of these chips in a tablet.

The idea that he's pro Nvidia is mostly myth and hyperbole that has snowballed over the years, if you repeat the same lie long enough many people will believe it.

He's always been pro OpenGL which is something Nvidia have historically done better, but as far as vendors go he's always been quite unbiased despite the mobs repeated attempts to paint him anti-ATi over the years. IIRC he has demoed just as many new games on Radeon rigs as Nvidia ones, and he even went as far as to do that AMD patch for Quake 2 when 3Dnow! came out. When he launched Doom 3 he was just as complementary/critical of the Raden 9K as the Geforce FX (in fact he actually leaned towards they Radeon). He was heavily critical of AMD after the RAGE launch debacle but rightly so and he criticised Nvidia as well (not as much but then they didn't screw up as much).
 
It's not difficult to beat the spec of the old consoles with any budget computer build.

The mistake would be to compare them just based on the numbers. The consoles have a huge library of games using close to the metal apis designed to get the most out of that specific hardware.
 
Nvidia contract must have expired LOL then AMD step in so naturally he is anti Nvidia now :rolleyes:

Wish he would fix Rage textures instead of saying anything actually but as he stepped away from ID as Zenimax would not let him make crappy VR games he is pretty hacked off right now as he needs more funds for his rocketship project :rolleyes:

I only used the Nvidia Poster boy line because frosty had used it in the post above. I don't know if he's biased one way or the other. Lately he has been percieved to be Nv biased but not by me. I don't agree with him about mantle but as you say he loves Open Gl so would naturally be slightly against Mantle.
 
Although coming from the perpetrator it doesn't mean much, I am in no way inclined to prefer a brand of anything blindly. I'm just cynical, not towards AMD specifically but recently just Mantle, which has gotten me flagged down as being pro NV

Very true. They give us things that work, so us idiots don't have to keep messing with settings in AB/TriXX and whatever else that AMD need to do to get their cards working. Hats off to the AMD guys for having to use their brains to use AMD equipment :p
