I've been reading reviews for the 2GB GTX 770 (Gigabyte), and one said users with bigger screens may want to invest in the 4GB.

Anyone with experience of this?

Should I invest in the 4GB for later progression to 1440 \ 27" Screen?

Thanks

Some do not agree but IMO a 680 does not have the power to use all 4GB.

I owned a 680 4GB and the 770 is basically a rehashed 680, I would look to a new or 2nd hand 780 TBH.

depends on the game and what you run it at.

the 680 (or the new 770 if you like), top of the line £500 card for a long time, cant run at that res on a single montior with decent performance? oh please, it will be fine.

if you can get the 4gb for very little more, sure why not, if you can't - it will get along fine.

I'm only playing at 2560x1080 with my single 770, and I think any extra pixels would be pushing it a bit too far. Things like 4xmsaa are already out of the question on the newest games for me.
I'd definitely go for at the very least a 780

@ llamadal Since when is the 680 or 770 a top of the line card and costing £500 now?

You need get over the fact your 680 is old now and was only 0-18% faster than a 580 depending on games and is crippled DP wise.

I made a mistake going from a 580 to a 680 but at least it was 4GB so at 1440p I did gain some help over the previous cards 2GB.

1x 780Ti is about the same as 2x670's/680's (dependant on what games).

As said if you want to max out everything at 1440p a 770 2gig is going to struggle, you could opt for the 7704gig and sli which is good performance.

As said 670 4gig sli delivers around 780ti performance in most games, however 2 x 770 4gig are going to cost today around £550-£600. At that point you might as well of bought a 780ti and that still leaves you the option to SLI later.

Yeah R290 is an option. Make sure its a non reference cooler and a make/warranty your happy with.

The gigabyte @ £329.99 seems good value.

A Single 3GB 780 Ti or R9 290 4GB will not give you the best all round performance for 2560x1440p single monitor.

As they have not got enough grunt -->2 GPU's at least.

For now look for a 2nd hand 680 4gb, gaming at 1440p you don't need everything on ultra as you get more detail due to the extra pixels'

I let Nvidia Geforce Experience optimize my games if supported it does a good job.

There is no point to go for 770 with 4gb vram if you can get 290 with similar vram but better performance. Or get a 780 if you prefer nvidia.

Size of the screen is irrelevant, its all about the pixels, and then the game, and then the card you plan to use and in that order, regardless of grunt, some games at 1440P require more than 2gig of Vram but not all, but at 1440P then some settings you can turn down imo without compromising IQ, but each to there own on that score, im happy playing on medium and upwards as im as its all about game play for me and high FPS and as high as refresh rate i can get for better smoother game play and low to zero input lag

General rule of thumb is simple get the best gpu you can afford, and more Vram is better to have and to not need than to need and not have, but myself well im happy to compromise to suit my budget and my needs

A 4gig 770 is false economy as it wont have the grunt to make good use of the extra Vram, however two in SLI would change that as you will have both grunt and Vram headroom, the opposite would be true of two 770 2gig cards tho this would still have the grunt, it would hit the Vram wall @ 1440P maxed out in games like Crysis 3, Farcry 3, BF4 just to name a few

So for me, i would rather have two of the cheapest 770 (seen these for £215) and turn down a few settings to stay under the 2GB limit and play at 120Hz with 120FPS and little or zero input lag or just one card if you have a 60Hz screen

Edit: The R290 would be better value for your money than a 4GB 770 providing that the 14.2 drivers are way better than the 14.1 were, i could not get my R290 to work with them so it went back

I have a 1440 monitor and a single overclocked 780 and most games run maxed out. If it doesn't I drop MSAA to 2x which produces a miniscule drop in IQ at this resolution and then it is smooth. You don't NEED two GPUs but having two will mean you'll max out 99% of games. However for the other games your second GPU will largely be 'wasted' because assuming you'll be frame limiting or using vsync to minimising screen tear means you'll be capping to the refresh rate.

Hope this helps optimus, grab that 780/780ti or a 290 now, enjoy it. Get that 1440p monitor when you can and then if your not happy with the settings you have to run things at add a second card.
