AMD 6990 OVERHEATING MADNESS ?

I have just started to get the past day or two massive overheating problems with my AMD 6990 Sapphire.

Idle temps on both GPU Diode (DispIO)'s are hitting close to 90c to 100c (on idle or watching tv, light stuff in other words) and this just all of a sudden happened, no driver changes or anything, it just changed, infact the only reason why I even noticed the temperature change is because the fan sounds like a rocket engine !!!

I took the card out and used my VERY high powered electric blower to give it a real good clean out and also updated to the latest driver and latest Intel chipset drivers for my board etc, still the same thing happened :(

In safe mode the temps are perfect, that may be because the motherboard doesn't fully use the graphics card in safe mode, I don't know, does it ????

Anyway, for now it is working but very hot as I say and everything else is cool temps, but I am very scared it does damage to something else, when you touch the card it is so hot it literally scalds your fingers etc :(

This is a first for me with this kind of thing

What could possibly be wrong, anyone know or got suggestions, as I say, I have tried cleaning the drivers out the usual way using the programs to do that and reinstall the new driver etc, but still no joy and that's from AMD's site and also Saphire's site too, the drivers install ok but still same thing happens is what I mean :(

I am stuck at a loose end here and don't know what to do next, there is so much heat off this thing I don't even need my raidiator switched on in the room to heat me up that its so warm, I am not joking, but as I say, touch wood for luck, all other temps, cpu, Motherboard etc seem just fine (for now).

My specs are in my sig you will see.

hope someone can help please asap, cheers :);)

p.s
anyone know the length of warranty on the amd 6990 sapphire, I bought it at full price within weeks or days of them being available for sale at first in the UK. ????

@ jh30uk, cheers mate, no, I guess you mean resitting the gpu's etc ? no I haven't done that and hmmmm, don't really fancy the challenge, this card is a genuine card with a receipt I need to find and it has never even had the overclock switch switched or nothing, this just happened like overnight, seems mad to me.....hmmmm

TIM = the thermal interface material on the Die/IHS to cooler like Artic Silver etc.

If you meant that cool, if resetting meant in slots then not what I meant.

If card went like this overnight look at the fan IMO.

Surely it would get hot regardless of safe mode or not if it was a Tim issue? What's GPU load like while its idling? I'd be checking for that mining virus.

No clue until he says yes or no, safe mode is not same load at in Windows and gaming etc.

Could be that virus that uses your GPU to mine.

its set on default settings for that card guys, and it did more or less happen overnight yes.

in safe mode temps are fine.

On normal Windows mode on idle its burning hot as I say, like approx 90-99c degree's on GPU1Diode (DispIO) and about mid to high 80's on GPU2Diode (DispIO), gpu1 has always been a bit hotter than gpu2, I think I heard before that is quite normal, but that's not in question just now.

I haven't even tried to stress it yet by playing a game to be honest, don't want to kill it altogether, LOL, so I couldn't say what the temps would be under stress but lets put it this way, I have seen it hit 100c even on GPU1Diode (DispIO) in idle windows mode, so that's saying something I guess :(

Whats this about a virus you guys are saying ? and how to get rid of ? I just use windows built in firewall and windows security essentials and if I ever need to do a full scan for virus's etc I just use the free find and fix softwares available such as trendmicro's one etc etc, a combination of doing that has generally always been fine for me but maybe not, please tell more ? Or if anyone has anymore info or suggestions that would be great.

Thank you very much so far guys for all your inputs, cheers :)

edit : oops, sorry, just noticed last user said try Malwarebytes or Combofix, I will have a look at those, cheers :)

just check GPU.Z and see for gpu load in idle and you will see.It can only get that hot if its being utilisized.

Even the Overdrive tab in CCC will tell you if your GPU is running flat out and fully loaded. That would explain where the heat is coming from, and then you would look for the cause which as explained above, might be a coin mining trojan.

Yes, In catalyst control centre and gpu-z it is saying it is saying that its literally fully loaded and I have nothing running at all apart from browsing here etc and I also tried Combofix as suggested before and it only found two things which I already know about and are not a threat, they are false positives or whatever ya call them, but no threat, hmmm......

What are the false positives? The mining trojans often call themselves legitimate sounding programs, such as timeserver.exe and it's associated service.

worse case scenario you could do a fresh windows install and if you still have the problem then you know it's deffo the card and not the rest of your machine

I don't think it's the card. If it's a "stuck at 3D clocks" type of driver bug, you'd get high clocks and some extra heat, but it wouldn't show as loaded and all the way up to 93 degrees.

Mining trojans typically show very little CPU usage, and very high GPU usage, but they load up the GPU and generate maximum heat from it.

I am running a free online search/find/fix scanner just now from Trend Micro's, I shall see how this goes, this is doing my head right in now man :( , been a couple of days at this trying to figure it out :( , even when I am using the overdrive tweaking option in CCC and turn down the GPU clock it still goes away up extremely hot give or take a couple of degree's :(

ok guys, tried malwarebytes (just the fast scan option), it found these, do any of these look like the culprit ?

I haven't removed anything yet as I don't want to remove something that I maybe shouldn't, please let me know.

Thanks again guys :)

Trojan.BitCoinMiner

Thats your problem right there buddy :)

Get MWB to do a full scan and sweep, make sure nothings lurking in any temp folders etc...

Edit: If MWB flags it, 99.99% of the time its something you shouldn't have on your machine, get rid of the lot.
