The N54 has two turbos which can tune easier due to being out for longer, and the encryption for the ECU has been long-cracked. It also has a bit of lag on delivery of power (i.e. accelerator delay) as reported by some owners. Also a fair bit thirsty.
The N55 has a twin-scroll turbo which is harder to tune and some encryption on the ECU hasn't been cracked yet, so only options are BMW Performance Power Kits for tuning realistically (unless you consider Burger Tuning kits). N55 has very little turbo lag or accelerator issues and in basic untuned guise should return about 26MPG in stop-start traffic, and 37MPG in long motorway hauls.
135i are generally just a cheap way to get a pocket rocket. Don't expect classy interior, well insulated against noise, or nice toys. Saying that, a few owners still protest that 135i are actually deliberately under-estimated by BMW for the performance to stop offending other owners (last version M3 owners), as, they could apparently offer more acceleration in a straight line over an M3.
(Don't mention corners though, as the 135i is generally more for drifting than going for a timetrial!).
