BMW 135i Coupe

Back considering options and other thoughts are

330i, 335i saloon or touring

130i but rare

135i coupe.

Just need to find something or look elsewhere.

Quick question... What does the number 5 represent?

I always thought the 35 meant the car had a 3.5 litre straight six.

The 5 represents the same 6 pot engine but with a turbo on the N55 engine, or twin turbo on the N54 engine.

N55 engine is from mid 2010 onwards

It represents it being more powerful than a 30i. The numbers do not necessarily have any relation to the engine capacity and they never have.

Okay so the 5 means nothing. But surely the second number represents the engine size.

In this case

Model 1 , Engine size 3 , Spam 5 and then i

The N54 has two turbos which can tune easier due to being out for longer, and the encryption for the ECU has been long-cracked. It also has a bit of lag on delivery of power (i.e. accelerator delay) as reported by some owners. Also a fair bit thirsty.

The N55 has a twin-scroll turbo which is harder to tune and some encryption on the ECU hasn't been cracked yet, so only options are BMW Performance Power Kits for tuning realistically (unless you consider Burger Tuning kits). N55 has very little turbo lag or accelerator issues and in basic untuned guise should return about 26MPG in stop-start traffic, and 37MPG in long motorway hauls.

135i are generally just a cheap way to get a pocket rocket. Don't expect classy interior, well insulated against noise, or nice toys. Saying that, a few owners still protest that 135i are actually deliberately under-estimated by BMW for the performance to stop offending other owners (last version M3 owners), as, they could apparently offer more acceleration in a straight line over an M3.

(Don't mention corners though, as the 135i is generally more for drifting than going for a timetrial!).

Can't say I've noticed any lag in the N54, seems responsive for 1500 upwards, actually feels like a NA car

I agree about the cornering though, the 1 series Msport suspension is shockingly bad, very twitchy on motorway on ramps and the joins in the sections on the motorways. Although nothing a boot load of M3 parts can't fix though :)

Hi there

Slightly off subject, but Evolve now have the 1M with their stage 3 kit making 430BHP and 490lb/ft, it must be a complete animal, so much power in such a light car and that torque must chew the rears up. :D

The first number is always going to be the model of car;

118d = 1 Series
325i = 3 Series

The next 2 numbers are designed to give you an idea of how the car sits in the engine range, I've heard people say that something like x35 means it had 'the power of a 3.5 litre' but I'm not sure about that. For me x35 means it's inbetween x30 and x40 or whatever the next engine up is.

i = petrol
d = diesel

Found a 2008 135i with 26k on the clock for £15k, which I'm tempted with. It's via BMW AUC, but I've been told it's been priced wrong so going up by £2k

It's not due in till April though

£500 to hold it.

They've offered £9k for my 59 123d M Sport though :(

That's what is holding me back at mo and they plan to increase the price to nearer £17k

If they thought they could get £17k for it why would they offer you it for £15k...

£17k sounds a bit lol for a 6 year old previous shape 1 Series.
