I need some stuff to go with my new Guitar, recommendations for amp, cable, strap all sorts

If guitars were cars Strat player would turn up in Mondeo.

I had to laugh at this :D

+1 for slinky's... D'addario's are fine as well...

I didn't really like Elixer's when I tried them, they have a sort of weird coating on them which felt a little strange

Don't buy really light gauge strings now because they're easier to play + bend etc. - you'll thank yourself later for building up the strength to play normal gauges

10s (10-46) are pretty much standard and probably a good place to start :)

I've used 9s before but the strings are just far too delicate especially the E and B, and I've used 11s which were okay but a little more tiring to play for long periods (depending on what I was playing)... 11s do have the benefit that if you like your drop tunings for metal and stuff they can sometimes help to fight against loose string-flapping a little bit

There are no contradictions if you stop picking sentences out of context and stop taking things literally, and I still feel it's a very good generalisation for beginners:

- you want bright, dry, twangy, clean sound, reach for standard tele
- you want bright, twangy but fuller sound and more versatility, reach for standard strat
- you want fast, loud, to be used mostly overdriven to 11, reach for superstrat
- you want darker, beefier, growling tone, reach for standard les paul

This is better...so much better than your BS Car analogies :p

You are taking things too literally.

Not back to the cars again...:(

Darn... why don't you tell us what you really think. :D

I usually do If I'm passionate about something.Even if that somethng is a guitar lol :o
Look. It's a great guitar for the price. Any of us would be over the moon lucky to have something like this as our first solidbody electric. Most of active players won't have such instrument in their life time. One could do much worse than PRS for a "one and only" guitar. For the money it was definitely better choice than current "under £1200" Les Paul range, and better investment than current "under £1200" American Fender range. I'd be more disappointed if Ray thrown over a grand on a US Tele or US Strat as his first guitar. Buying undervalued boutique studio guitar instead is really not a shame.

I'm not saying it isn't a good guitar...I'm saying its predictable and a guitar and imo quite dull...Its needs wings on the fingerboard as its insecure about itself....Its like a peacock but with personality issues :p

Yes, Ray could have purchased several used guitars for the money but he wanted one guitar. That was his target. One guitar that's universally good to play, last for years no matter what genre of music he decides to play and in the same time he wanted it to be aesthetically pleasing nice to look at when he doesn't play it (keep in mind Ray is one of the best photographers one encounters on internet forums). I think he succeeded. It's going to be pleasure to pick it up and fantastic feel and sound will encourage him to do so every time, I have no doubt.

A used 335 would have been my choice if I was him. A really versatile instrument that looks the nuts....

Your zebrawood is beautiful model and a great "custom" item, is that 2007 Classic model with binding and burstbuckers?

Yeah....I imported it in from the states when the exchange rate was rocking...:D Think its cost me around £675 shipped including taxes..Its one of my favourite guitars....

Gibson has been making Smartwood Exotic on and off since 1996 but mostly as Studios. Series were limited to about 1000 per batch, but that's per batch of wood sourced, not per finish or run. All exotics, excluding Classic series, which I think your microberlinia topped model is, had thinner and lighter bodies than standard Les Pauls and with 490R/498T combo they sounded closer to Gibson SG standard than full bodied Les Paul Standard with Burstbuckers.
You have quite a few rare items in your collection. SG that doesn't sound like SG, Les Paul that's unlike most Les Pauls, Tele that's more Tele than most Teles. All roads from your rehersal room seem to lead to Nashville, don't know if intentionally? :D

Not intentionally....I've had a US tele since the early days...But wen I came across the 1998 collectors edition....It was totally different to any tele I played before..It sounded and played ace...And I loved the single ply scratch plate and the vintage spec and neck.

The SG was a whim....Never liked SG's personally...I traded my Gibson Standard in for a used US tele when I was 15....

I bought it for £600 again imported in from the states and flipped it 3 weeks later for £1100 in the UK...regret it slightly but the SG always felt to thin in the body thickness wise..It never felt substantial enough in the hand :p

I bought the Deluxe US Strat for £350 off a hen pecked Husband who wanted to spite his wife. Still had the plastic on the pick guard.... I said you do know how much it is worth? He said yeah....But he was glad to see it go to a good home....

The Martin was bought off a sailor in Skegness...He bought and sold guitars on his travels and bought them back as hand luggage on the ships...He gave his mates a cut if they agreed to carry a few for him....I remember going around to his house...The OM-18 was nearly as beatuiful sounding as his Russian wife :p...He tooke me upstaires and I saw a Master Bedroom with about 20 Martins in all for sale...Roughly about £35,000 worth...

Martin only made about 750 of the OM-18V and no acoustic I have heard can rival its volume attack and punch for the OM- Size...Its sounds as big as a D-18

As I say...I just like them....Its probaly coincidence they are all "natural" colours but paint hides things...

Having said that a Black 335 or Cheery 335 would not go a miss :)

I find every guitar is different Raymond. Find out what strings are on the guitar at the moment and go from there.

I use different strings for each of my guitars. My Strat I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys. Duesenberg I use D'Addario EXL Nickel Wound and for the Les Paul it's currently setup for studio work so I'm using flatwound for Low E A D G with single packets of round wound Ernie Ball for B and E strings.

For what it's worth, my experience of playing over the years has told me to go for the strings that suit the guitar over the brand. Oh and apart from the Les Paul I stick to 10's.

I got some elixir and slinkies on the way will prob put the elixirs on since I like them on the Taylor, if that doesn't feel right then will put slinkies on

The guitar is new so it has stock PRS strings from the factory which was from 2011 so thought a new set of strings to freshen it up a bit.

p.s. first time I've heard someone describe getting a PRS custom 24 as a first electric guitar - dull & predictable :p As opposed to Fender Squire, Epi LP, or Yamaha Pacifica (no offence to those getting them as a first electric as they are good guitars) but...PRS Custom 24 with a 10-Top is predictable? okay, if you say so :)

And isn't the 335 a hollow body electric? I already have one of those, and I've said before, many people have commented how similar the T5 can feel and sound like the 335. Not sure I want one that similar to it.

^^ I presume easyrider meant predictable not in the sense of it being a first-guitar but in the sense of a predictable "top-end/expensive guitar" when for that kind of money you have the privilege to choose from pretty much any make or model of guitar you want...

But it's all just opinions :) I wouldn't get a PRS myself either - not because they are bad guitars but I just feel there are other models out there that speak to me more

Everyone is own there own journey...So I agree with you.

Some paths though have no adventure to them :p

I don't think so...They are two very different guitars...

From the forums

"The T5 It's not a very good acoustic, and it's not a very good electric."

"In other words, you won't have that big fat acoustic sound, nor will you have a very good semi hollow sound "

"a lot of guys buy them off of reputation or looks, and then proclaim it's greatness. the ones that really do like the sound tend to not have as trained of an ear. the way they accent the treble draws a lot of attention, but as a player develops his ear, most start looking for more complexity and depth than taylor can offer"

"I own a several Taylors. I have 4, 9 series Acoustic Taylors and previously owned a T5. I had the T5 for about a year and hated it for acoustic. The only reason to play the T5 acoustic is if you dont have a decent acoustic. The T5 was worthless to me as far as the "acoustic" feature. They lie....its crap for acoustic and it takes a lot to get it to sound decent. I traded it in for a LP Studio and switch from the acoustic to electric, the ole' fashion way.

In my opinion, a decent acoustic will SMOKE the baddest T5 acoustically any day. "

I'm just saying....people have their own opinions...I have mine....A T5 is nothing like a 335 not one bit. :)

A thing of beauty
