Games and Load Times

I think that games these days take too long to load, I just loaded Thief and it was 1 minute 30 seconds until I was playing the game. And Thief isn't one of the worst offenders.

The worst offenders have to be Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 which take 3 minutes to get in game which is plain ridiculous.

I actually think that I don't play some games as much as I'd like to because of the load times.

I think one of the reasons I used to play Call of Duty 4 so much was because it loaded very quickly and map changes took a matter of seconds.

I can't afford a high capacity ssd to put my games on so I'm stuck with using a mechanical hdd for my games.

Anyone else think that long load times ruin the gaming experience? Thanks.

I keep my most played games on a 250gb ssd as it really helps with load times. Lesser played ones on a mechanical drive as i dont mind the longer load times.

Even on an ssd, bf4 still takes a bit longer to load than bf3. Still much faster than a mech drive though.

Thief is a particularly bad example of modern game load considering it doesn't seem to have much to actually load.

BF4 on the other hand you could realistically expect to take a while.

For me load times effecting gameplay varies, in a multiplayer game load times don't bother me however in single player games anything above about 30 seconds really breaks flow.

I'm using a cruddy old IDE drive ATM and my load times aren't that bad at all but then I ain't playing Thief or BF4.

Games are huge now so it's no wonder it takes a while to pre-cache GB's of material into memory. Some game engines do it better by organizing file structure efficiently and not compressing to speed it up. I also find having a top of the range motherboard helps a lot with the faster bus speeds. I use to be one of the first to change map on CSS back in the day. :p

That sounds way longer than it should be, you could try updating the mobo bios and chipset drivers. Also some mobo's have more than one type of sata port, check the hdd is plugged into the fastest port.

I put one or two games on my ssd everything else is on a WD black HDD. Cant say I notice bad load times, not played thief though.

I own BF4 which occasionally I wish would hurry up, but dont think its too bad.

Clearly everyone here hasn't played any of the STALKER games, particularly with the complete mod. The last time i tried STALKER CoP with the complete mod it took 5 1/2 minutes to load. While i don't have an SSD, my hard drive is relatively good

Kerbal space program with plenty of mods takes even longer, the vanilla game isn't to bad.

Mortal Kombat II was the best on Amiga. When you did a fatality it would pause and ask for disk 3 or something, load for 30 seconds then complete the fatality, then ask for disk 1 again :)

BF4 is the only game I notice with stupid loading times, if I could afford a decent sized SSD then I would do that but for pretty much 99% of my uses a mechanical drive is still more than adequate.

BF4 is even pretty ridiculous on ps4 tbh it takes ages! I don't think Thief has been that bad tbh. PC games generally load pretty quick anyway.

bf3/bf4/dayz sa benefit from ssd a lot.

bf4 im always one of first running around :D gpu settings can slow it down a little aswell on loading .

Mmm

'These days'

A generational thing i know, but if you grew up in the 8/16 bit era, then with the multiloads, and insert next disk to continue issues of old, then these days are probably the best there's ever been.

Even 32 bit, 3do, playstation.. pc's, bf2 might be the best part of 10 years old.. but not exceeding big time on the ram, and you were waiting those 2-3 minutes.

Surprised there is no mention of the total war games yet, when load times are mentioned just starting up the game can take a good couple of minutes, Shogun 2 was notoriously bad thankfully it was eventually patched to improve it.

BF2 with 512meg of RAM was so long to load,I'd go off and make a cup of tea while waiting.
Quick RAM upgrade fixed that though :)

Lotro is the worst game ive played with a load up. normally first load up of the day select my character then enter game and ive had it take up to 10mins to load even in quiet areas and using an SSD.
