Light rant.

I was actually suprised today on the M5, every vehicle had their lights on, many even had fog lights on!

Apart from a single goon in a silver MPV, no lights what so ever. Weird as it was pretty new so surely would have had auto lights that should have come on..

I thought the same thing yesterday morning when we had bad fog. I put it down to people thinking only of themselves most of the time, "I dont need my lights on cause I can see everyone." Thats only because everyone else has their lights on you selfish twerp.

Remember the Fabia, Ibiza and other cars use there fogs and Day Light Running Lights. I got stopped yesterday by site security as my fogs were on. Had to explain I couldn't turn them off (It was a courtesy car).

It just amaises me how many people today didnt have a single light on!!! Dark grey insignia coming towards me on a county lane just came out of no where.

I had every light possible on this morning so people could see me (except beams of course).

Pulled out onto the bypass this morning when the road was completely clear and no hints of lights in the fog, next thing I know is that I suddenly have a Mazda right up my arse with absolutely no lights on whatsoever, laying on his horn and gesticulating because I had the audacity to pull out in front of him.

Felt like coming to a stop, getting out of the car and beating his head on his headlight switch shouting 'THIS IS HOW YOU SWITCH THEM ON'.

The amount of people with no lights on at all or just sidelights was scary this morning.

Never found the need yet to use the front fog lights for years, the dipped beam is ample. Rears have been used a few times but as soon as a car is behind me they are turned off to stop dazzle and allow them to see the brake lights.

Plus side with newer cars is the fog lights are turned off automatically so they are not left on accidentally by the infirm/confused for weeks after a bit of fog.

Would you moan and complain at me who had no fog lights? In 7 yesrs of driving I have not needed them, maim beam has been sufficient. When visibility is low my real fog is on.

WTF? You don't use main beam in fog. Do you mean dipped instead?

Basically my car has no fog lights but but in 7 years of driving in various cars some of which have had fog lights the main beam has been sufficient.

What?

It's a legal requirement to have a rear fog light.

Main beam and Full beam?

Main beam used normally and Full to see an unlit country road?

Have I got the terminology wrong?

Yes - you've got the terminology wrong.

You have, in order of brightness:-

sidelights > dipped beam > main beam (or what you're calling full beam).

pretty much this.

Why would they? Auto lights detect light levels, not weather conditions.

...which can affect light levels. My lights automatically come on when it's overcast. With a thick enough fog they would probably come on. This morning the fog was quite light in my region though.

WTF? Chill its an internet forum. Do you say WTF to random strangers on the street?

Dipped, main beam full beam, who really wants to be pedantic, yes dipped is correct but I say main beam and full, I am not really bothered what term I use :)

I never said it was not a legal requirement just like its not one for front fogs. I was simply stating I use mine when visibility is low. Not many do.

Chill out grab a beer in this lovely weather.

What is this fog you speak of?

I see a lot of people not bothering with lights when it gets dim, never mind using the correct ones for fog. Really does annoy me.
