Drives spinning down

I have installed Windows on my SSD and programs on my HDD and after a while of not using my system the HDD spins down or when I am not using something on that drive and it slows the whole system down.

I have disabled the sleep option for the drives in windows and it is a bit better but it still happens and sometimes have to wait up to a minute for the system to become active.

Anyone know why this is happening?

If you've changed the power management options in Windows then it's probably the hard drive itself going into a power save mode. Waiting up to a minute sounds odd though (it's a few seconds for mine). What type of drive is it?

Thanks hopefully this should do the trick I have just set it up on the drives see what happens,

I have 2 partitions for both drives so 4 in total I have set it up on all 4 is this right?

Regardless of OS setting WD Green's spin done too soon and too much, check to see if Blue's are the same.

The WD green is designed to have fairly aggressive power management, which makes it good for storage applications where you only need infrequent access but not so good for other applications like in a NAS. This doesn't make them crap, just not suitable for what you want.

http://nosleephd.codeplex.com/ <Works for me for WD Ext HDD (Green crap inside).

If you set the timer wrong on this then the LCC count could increase rapidly and may limit the drive's life (as well as it using more power and running hotter).

To the OP, does it take the same time for both drives to "wake up"? It might be worth running diagnostics and looking at the SMART data (e.g. manufacturer tools, HDtune, CrystalDiskInfo) to make sure there's nothing amiss with the drives.

I was not asking for input it was Vakas.

The WD My Book's comes with a Green HDD's now after using Caviar Black's in past so there is nothing I can do about that.

I use it for backup but I do not like it making my PC take a few sec's to do things when it goes to sleep (even if its not a file on the Ext HDD).

The Smartware also causes issues and cannot be 100% removed as in the Firmware.

I know as I have lived with this PIA since I upgraded from the old Caviar Black 500GB to this 3TB.

The above App fixes it for me and I would not loose any sleep over drive life.

1st thing I tried and it does not work with my drive.

You can see many on WD forum in same boat.

I am sorted but have one unrelated issue so next time I will be buying a couple of black and sticking on a dock and running ESATA to get all drive functions not USB.

I have ran diagnostic checks before and is fine. Since I have 2 internal drives I don't know which one is taking the longest but it is a pain the system comes to complete halt until it spins up.

I have had the suggested software running for a while and it seems to have done the trick.

I know it can make the drives run hotter and be less power efficient this way but Sometimes I need to access data fast and it really annoying.
