A45 AMG Test Drive - First Impressions

Ok agree, but I still hate them, LOL 12 months in this Merc was enough. In the wet it spun, on any hills it spun

What tyres did it have? This is very unusual behaviour for something like an E Class saloon and not exactly an ultra powerful model at that. Given the target demographic for such a car, such skittishness would be deemed most unacceptable.

its was the 260 BHP they were new Pirellis, big ones as well, quite a torque loaded car really, 0-60 was 6seconds. Gotta understand though I was coming from a 4wd world, and being presented with traction issues...

read this not just Clarkson
scroll down a bit

With Kids etc, I would never want this in my mind at all......

he does have a good idea though have a spoiler fit may help, The A45s adds over 40KG of down force at speed

So what "bits kept falling off" your mates RS3? I know a lot of owners and none of them have this issue. Only issue they have had is squeaking brakes. Other than that they all find it absolutely fantastic.

it was more trim related internals etc, but hes a car freak changes a lot, and this just was a ballache to him, he may have had a bad car, hes now just sold his 330D Xdrive for a Focus ST3 Montune whilst he contemplates the next car. Maybe A45 or the new Black edition when it arrives

I think if you remap the RS3 its a mega car. And wasn't it near on 50k when it was out ?

As for Tail kicking out, WTF would I want to do that Honestly, not all of us have a track to ourselves, and I certainly don't buy a car with that in mind. I only have to draw your attention to Top gear and the M135 spinning off the track from a straight-line

Just straight line speed then?

WTF do you want to buy a 350bhp car if you don't have a race track? Odd logic.

Pretty much what I was going to put, but I tried to be more subtle. ;)

Traffic light GPs, yo!

To be fair though it's still fun coming off a roundabout/slip road etc and giving it the beans but I do kinda see this as a bit of a pointless car on the road (overkill).

You mean as pointless as an M3 or C63 AMG, or even an M135i I bet about 10% of that user base never even sniff a track

I just do not see the point of kicking the backed out unless on a track. Not practical is it now...

Probably fun.

Out of interest what do you class as a none track car then?

What's the deal with the '45' - I always thought the number represented engine capacity with Mercs, or is it I guess A20 doesn't exactly inspire performance so they've converted it to a rough N/A equivalent?

Will do, I'm unsure how reliable merc are with delivery dates, I'm told pretty rock solid, but I won't hold my breath,

July 14th is get excited day....then off work for 2 weeks holiday etc so a good month...

Any car can be a track ****.

Some are just better or more fun than others. If I had the choice of the M135i or the A45 AMG it would be the Beemer.

On a road? Like you say it's just about getting to 70, flicking the cruise control on and getting from A to B safely and comfortably, and I'm sure the Merc is superb in this regard (probably better than the Beemer).

We all like different things and I'm sure the A45 AMG will be a hoot to drive and I'm sure you'll love it.

Edit: despite what I have said above I like the look of these (probably my most favourite looking 'hot hatch' at the moment*) so I want to see pictures too. :)

*until the new Type R ricer comes along /fingers crossed.

I'm aware that actually this argument applies equally to the F10 M5, btw.
You don't need to go as high as an M5 for that comparison.

518d : £30k
535d : £50k

Same interior, apart from a few M badges and black headlining. Many people still buy the 535.

This interior is the same as 'x' argument doesn't make sense.

You could own a Ferrari Enzo with no comforts and someone with a Pug 206 with A/C etc pulls up alongside. Does the Enzo driver think, what have I spent £600k+ on this for!.

Probably until his 20-years-younger-than-him girlfriend asks him where they're going for dinner tonight (assuming he's at least 40 :))

Must say I had the 03 type r was the best car I've ever owned bulletproof and I hammered it everyday.

The new one does look interesting and I would have looked at it hard if it had been out, but I need a car by August, or work will wonder why I keep fobbing them off when wife won't let me use hers lol

I love a cateram and have a crack at the track, gonna go see how much they are on pistonheads

To be clear, this is why most people buy a fun car. So as I said, you want to drive quick in a quick car (which I get) but you don't want to slide the back around a bit as it's not on a race track....which I don't get as on a race track you don't want to slide the back around as it tends to be slower and to your point, oversteer is fun and we all seem to like fun.

Hence my comment.

I’m not going to wade into the ‘is the A45 worth the money’ or not debate but I had to pick up on this point as it gets made quite a lot and IMHO it’s really flawed.

‘Having the money’ is a really irrelevant counter to the point he made. His point isn’t that ‘wow, that’s expensive’ but ‘wow, that’s expensive for what it is’.

That isn't what he said and was not in the context of my post, he cleared up in a later post.

Having the money and buying what you want is a reasonable counter to that argument however you want to cut it. Its the identical argument for buying a decent watch where they range from a few 100 to many 1000's justifying that is exactly the same, its what I want and I'm willing to pay its price.

And whilst its also at the top end of the price for that sort of car its not alone in being in that bracket. The M235i is 35k in auto form, M135i is 32.5K , the S3 is 32.5K, S3 saloon is 35K in auto form none of which is directly comparable and all before you even think of putting any options on them. They are also not the full blown M1, M2 or RS3 which would be in the class of the A45 and what price point are they likely to be in? North of 40K I'd think before you even look at the option lists.

All cars over the last few years have headed north on price, a 320d M Sport auto is 33.5K yet nobody is bleating about that, yet we have a AWD, hatchback with a hand built 360BHP engine that is an absolute blast to drive on the public road and you'd think that it'd been built by a bunch of mass murders for the "uproar" that people are in over the price...
