Debating aquarium layout...

Sometimes they just die of stress. If the other two are still looking quiet spritely then I wouldn't worry too much. Some fish shops will offer you a replacement if you let them test your water and they find it to be in good shape.

fish die unfortunately, i've just lost three green chromis (totally disappeared) they were about 3 years old, but no changes in parameters of tank either although i don't check unless something dies or my leather coral looks unhappy :)

edit to say those were my first loses in 3 years too :(

The other two are pretty chilled at the mo, they are both chilling on the biggest leaf on my amazon sword slowly clearing it of brown algae.

I will mention it to the people I got them from (Maidenhead Aquatics). But don't really expect them to do much.

It's a real shame though :( one of the three did seem much more reluctant to come out of the bag than the other two, wonder if that was the one.

Odd question but will MA want to see the dead Otto?

Research drip acclimitisation of new fish, far better than the "floating bag/ add water periodically" method.

Did you test the stats of the bag water? Some fish shops will use reverse osmosis water in their tanks with very little hardness, which means a much more cautious acclimitisation if you are using local tap water that is hard.

I only tested my own water. :/

That's an odd clause!

Went back down to MA today with a water sample and the poor otto. They said water is perfect and gave me a new one who seems much happier (touch wood!).

Will see how the three of them get on now :)

How was it?

Approx 0ppm for ammonia, nitrite and under 5ppm for nitrate.
Just got myself a new test kit.
Tested now and surprise surprise.... 0ppm for ammonia, 0ppm for nitrite, between 0ppm and 5ppm for nitrate.

Last water change was over a year ago when I moved house.

Get very aquainted with "old tank syndrome" before doing a water change, the tank water chemistry is likely to be very different to that in your taps (far more goes on in the tank than ammonia/nitrite/nitrate)... Changing more than ~10% of your water per water change could kill any fish through shock.

For a start, if you have had fish in there and done no water changes for ~12 months, kH levels are likely to be very low and the pH rather acidic.

did a quick pH since you mentioned it :)

Tank volume?
Fish occupants (species; quantity; approx. age; rough body size in cm less their tail fin i.e. Standard Length)?
What is the pH of your tap water?
Got the kH and gH hardness test kits?

I stress if I have not done a water change after 10 days, I normally do ~50% weekly on my six tanks (130-450l)!

190litre
3x brilliant rasbora - approx 3 inch each - all over 5 years old (was a group of 6 originally)
3x various rainbow - 1 is 4 years old and about 3 inches, grown from an egg by accident in a planted nano, 2 are 2 inchs and purchased a few months ago.
2x Convicts - regular breeding pair. over 2 years from purchase.
3x clown loach - 2 are 2 inches, 1 is 1.5 or so. Apptox age of just under a year.

Filtration
1x Fluval 205
1x 40 litre sump tank with overflow sand based with 3 layer filter material, cascade over filter media entry into the sump.
I also run a home made moving k1 filter in the main tank.

2 t8 strip lights in 8 hours a day, and a blue led moonlight setup.

Is anyone able to ID my plants for me please? I'm looking to do some research about how to trim them down without ruining them.

Cheers,

G

Decided to trim the plants anyways as some were all the way up to the surface lol!

I re-planted some of the bits I cut off.

Just one thing Guru, it is pointless running air stones with Co2, you just cancel the Co2 out, water movement on the surface is enough to air the tank bud, you could run the air stone at night when the Co2 is off, Co2 not needed at night.

Thanks mate :) I got the air stone because a can't turn my CO2 off at night. I will turn the air off during the periods when the lights are on :)
