Trying to plan a trip in June for the missus and me and its looking to be one of the above.
We've been to Kracow and Berlin over the past couple of years and loved both. Lots to do and see over the 4 days and some lovely food. We do like going to bars but not to nightclubs if that has any baring.
Could anyone give any 1st hand experience on any of the above places? I've spent ages on Trip Advisor and am prob starting to side with Budapest but the missus seems more interested in Riga or Bucharest.

Thanks for any input guys! :)

I absolutely loved Budapest when I went there on a 2 week tour of Europe and would have loved to have been able to spend longer then the 3 days I did (and that was extended from the 2 scheduled). I went during the Sziget Festival (but didn't go to Sziget as its on an island).

Riga is quite small, lots of stag dos.... Budapest is awesome, a lot more to do culturally - Castles, Opera house and much more unique nightlife - ruin bars, open air clubs, parties in 100 year old Ottoman baths etc...

Thats an odd reason not to go - there is bridge....

Budapest is certainly the Paris of East and has a lot to offer which the other places won't match. We could easily spend another week there.

Wow thanks all, certainly helps :)
@ Dowie - that was one of my worries about Riga (an Tallin by the looks of it) being pretty small and running out of stuff to do.
@ Sigma - please do report back when you get home!

Went to Tallin a couple of years ago.

Awesome place, lots to see if you like culture.

Definately one of my favourite places visited.

Plus you can hop across the sea if you fancy seeing Finland.

Not quite sure what you'd get up to in Bucharest. If anyone has ideas please let me know. I live here and would love to know hehe

:D

Whilst we did a lot of cultural stuff, this was the highlight of our trip. There was a real mix of participants, including one girl who was probably 7 stone firing a magnum 44 which almost took her off her feet!

If anyone has some must-sees/dos in Buda I would appreciate recommendations.

Tempted to do one of the bus tours, visit some of the baths (will probably do this on the last day) and also possibly visit a shooting range!

Suggestions for museums would be most welcome.

didn't do much on the Buda side aside from see a Castle

Pest on the other hand....

Opera house - really nice interior - can book a tour in the day or buy tickets in advance to see a show... St Stephen's Basilica in the centre is worth a look too, as is the four seasons hotel nearby (Gresham Palace - was originally built as accommodation/offices for a British Insurance firm back in the day....). there is also a big Synagogue in the Jewish quarter.

Bus tour is worth a look, alternatively you can do a segway tour too... River cruise might be worth a look if you're going with a gf.... There is a city park with another Castle - couple of museums are located here next to heroes square. I went to the Szechenyi Baths when I was over there - huge place with a bunch of indoor and outdoor pools... get a cabin ticket in advance from your hotel so you can skip any queues.

Re bars... check out some ruin bars... Simpla is the popular one which pretty much every tourist/backpacker will go to once, there is also a 24hr ruin bar/club called Instant - tis basically situated near to a bunch of hostels and full of a mix of erasmus students, backpackers, locals. For more a upmarket bar/club check out Trafiq or Otkert.

Avoid taxis in the street, especially ones stopped at tourist sites - they'll flick on the super fast switch on the mirror and screw you... Get the number for legit firms from your hotel - City Taxi is good, you could also just get the hotel to book taxis for you and confirm prices in advance. Also re: taxis - at the airport you'll see guys standing in arrivals offering you a taxi - ignore these gypos and proceed the the actual taxi booth where you give your destination and get a printed receipt with the amount you need to pay and get allocated a legitimate taxi driver.

On the underground make sure you stamp in with the paper ticket... they don't have electronic barriers at the entrances/exits but wages are low enough that its economically viable to employ teams of big apes to stand there checking tickets manually.... said big apes will attempt to catch out tourists and demand a cash fine if they do catch you out.

Other tips - don't chat to girls on vaci utca, if its a stag do holiday and you need a strip club - Hallo bar is one of the honest venues which is up front regarding drinks/pricing etc.., you'll read plenty of horror stories on tripadvisor about most of the others (which are almost all clip joints).

Thanks for all the input chaps. Seems that Budapest has clinched it :)
So far then it looks like we'll be going for 4 nights in June flying from Bristol (nearest but only 2 flights per week) and the 7 Season Appartment or Bohem Art Hotel seem to be ticking a lot of boxes atm and seem to be pretty close to the city centre.
Would be interested to hear where you Budapest veterans stayed too :)

(read: please forum - sort my holiday)

We spent a few night in Budapest on the way back from our Romanian tour, stunning city and I really wish we had stayed longer.

This hotel was chosen as it had underground car parking;

but it was also a really stunning hotel too, certainly the nicest place we stayed in outside of Romania.

We did the gun shooting at Ceritas which someone has already linked, good tip is to ask for the Dragnov sniper rifle as an add-on to your package.

Museum of Terror is worth a visit and gives a great insight into the history of Budapest and Hungary as a whole.

There are some baths located directly behind the hotel which, from the outside looked a little off-putting but were actually very good.

We spent 3 hours just walking about in the evening/night soaking in the atmosphere and sights.

Budapest doesn't seem too expensive yet, obviously not as cheap as the rest of Hungary or Romania but certainly not priced like Paris/Bruge etc.

As a side note the Romanian friend we had with us for most of Hungary and Romania refused to take us to Bucharest ;)
