I only ask as I see in some of the 'spec me' threads people are opting for win7

I have win8 and haven't had many problems, maybe a bit of faffing about but nothing serious

because some people don't like/moan about the new start menu UI and they want the beloved old style start menu back. that's the only real reason.

sad really but hey it's up to them really.

It's not worth 'upgrading' for 7 to 8. I'll go that far.

Actually it was worth upgrading to Win8 especially those 15 and 25 quid deals, shame I did not have that pricing for my ex-Win7,anyway improved security is always a good thing.

As to reasons why some don't upgrade or go with Win8 it's down to various things ie some don't like Metro or change, some can't afford it,some have no need, some like to stay with what they know.

Regardless I hope we get some nice 15 and 25 quid deals for Win9 :).

Win 8 is a fine, elegant OS.

Hold outs are still hung up on ideas the OS generated when it first came out.

It's like the tired notion that AMD drivers are crap. These are ideas from a bygone era that people just keep repeating. (Used too anyway)

Win 8 is great. If your building a gaming rig, it's essential imo!

For me I have to spend quite a bit of time tweaking Windows 8 to get back to the experience that Windows 7 provides out the box with minimal tweaking (though I still disable window snapping and change some start menu options on 7) so its not an "upgrade" I will rush to.

End of the day different people have different ways to approach the OS - i.e. for some people typing into the search box to find apps, etc. is the most natural and efficent way for them to use an OS so Windows 8 works great for them, for others this is a completely alien concept and that method does not at all improve and in some cases may degrade the experience.

Bit like Vista v Win 7 - the changes are in many ways quite small and some people don't understand why Windows 7 is so well recieved by some people who absolutely hate Vista but with Vista just those 1-2 extra steps or changes made the difference between a seamless workflow and some slight frustration in everyday use for many people.

I did the £25 upgrade a while ago
just been reading - if I'm reinstalling on a new system will I have to install XP - then upgrade to 8 - then 8.1 ?

I didn't...

you just need to get a full iso then install using a temp key for windows 8 then change it once windows is installed... and then upgrade to 8.1 via the store

you will probably have to activate using the automated telephone line..

Curious as to why it's essential for a gaming rig?

I do believe it's faster. (Maybe just a little) But DX11.2 has lots of features that DX11 (11.1) doesn’t have.

One of them being CPU optimizations which made it in to BF4.

The differences maybe small, but if your an enthusiast or simply want to get the most out of your hardware. I think imo Win 8 is essential.

the ui can be dealth with, the snappyness is lovely, even some of the features I am now used to using and wish w7 had.

but all that pales in significance compared to the wireless manager....

I'm still on Windows 7 because it is the superior M&KB interface. Windows 8 is fine if you have a Lumia, or a Surface.

Whats the big deal about the Wifi managler?

I prefer W8 to W7. Just feels faster, better file copying, task manager, better drivers etc.

Don't use Metro at all. Have no need to.
