After spending about 30+ hours on this while I was off, it's safe to say I absolutely love the game. It's very much a good mixture of Demon and Dark Souls and in some respects it has taken the best bits of each.
Majula, despite the size, reminds me a lot of the Nexus. It's your safe zone and where you go to level up. I know some people will see this as a step backwards from Dark Souls, but I honestly don't mind. Normally when I head back to Majula to level up, I'll spend my excess souls at the Blacksmith upgrading a weapon, or buying some extra arrows, so I never feel like I'm wasting my time heading back there. I also like that you can upgrade elemental weapons using normal Titanite shards, with no more need for blue or green Titanite.
I like the fact you can warp to your visited bonfires without needing any items. Given the sheer size of Dark Souls 2, this is definitely a godsend.
I love the fact you can become human easily without having to visit a bonfire. It's always been a pain to become human in Dark Souls, with the intention of getting some help with a boss, only to find you die on your way to the boss fog. At least now, you can clear the area out, use an Effigy outside the boss fog, and not have to worry about dying while you get there.
None of the bosses I've faced so far have felt cheesy or cheap (I'm probably about 13 bosses into it). Some bosses definitely feel like they have been designed with co-op in mind (such as The Pursuer and The Gargoyles), but most can be beaten easily solo when you've learned the attack patterns.
I also love the fact they've increased the fat roll equip limit to 70% from 50%. It of course makes complete sense now you can equip 3 items per hand, but it's still a welcome change. Also, dual wielding weapons is now a very viable way to play thanks to the improved combat. I'm definitely going to look into that more for my 2nd playthrough.
The only thing I can think of that I don't like is that jumping is still as much about luck as it is about skill. I think I died more from jumping off ledges than anything else during my first couple of hours with the game. If they can fix that at all, I'd be very happy!
