Dark Souls II Gameplay Tips and Spoiler Thread

That is the entire point of the bossfight if you don't like the torches.

Which would have been fine if the whole torch thing was actually relevant. I had no problem seeing her at default brightness cause they made the lighting aspects of the game redundant which meant I had no indication of the whole gimmick.

Can people stop using spoiler tags? This is a spoiler thread, they aren't necessary.

Yes they are because I don't want the last boss spoiled but might want to discuss another boss. Just cause it's a spoiler thread doesn't mean I want everything spoiled for me.

Don't blame then for your lack of awareness.

I never use torches either (there's only been one are which I felt required them) but even so I realised the point of oil when I saw it.

Not your torch, you can light up the entire boss arena before the fight.

Yes I know. My point being the lighting aspect of the game is pointless because they all but removed it. Had they not and had I had trouble seeing the boss I might have actually had to think about it and not just put in down to a borked lock on system which the series is often known for. I also didn't have the key as I couldn't be arsed bothering with a 3 on 1 boss fight to get the key.

The lock on system is not "known to be borked", it can be fiddly at times certainly but its largely fine. Stop making excuses for your own lack of awareness.

Well then you have no excuse. It isn't even that hard a fight.

Honestly, I don't see why you're still posting in this thread let alone playing the game, you clearly don't want any advice or to actually discuss anything, you just want petty excuses to say how bad the game is and how you want it to be.

Agree, i want a place to discuss upto where i am, and not find out about stuff that i havent seen yet. I cant see the harm in a title followed by a spoiler tag. Otherwise theres no point coming here until you finish the game?

Struggling a bit on The Rotten now. I have only had 2 gos, but was nowhere near on either of them!.. No human effigies left as well, so can't summon too.

I didnt really explore The Gutter tbh... I just wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible! I have probably missed out an area, but might go back later. I did join the Rat Covenant though.

Edit- ha! I think others might be having trouble with the lost sinner as well... Left a summons sign outside and got summoned after about 5 seconds 3 times. On one of them, I took one for the host, and took a risky shot to finish him off whilst doing myself. Good way to break up the game, and get some souls/items. Is the level scaling the same for summons as invasions, I mean withing 10 levels or whatever?

I had a lot of trouble with Rotten as well because I was trying the usual circle strafe to the right malarky and it doest really work with him.

Best method for the Rotten as a melee character is actually to stay right in front of him and bait his attacks, they are quite slow so move/roll out when he telegraphs. When he does his single vertical chop dodge it then run forward and whack his hand a few times, eventually his arm will fall off and after that go to town, all you have to dodge is his grab and frankly I'm not sure if that actually works because I haven't been hit by it whilst his sword arm is gone. He doesn't seem to do his triple chop if you are directly in front of him, just make sure you only move away from him when he does an attack, that way he will never move forward.

His arm eventually regenerates but you should have more than enough time to finish him off, don't worry about the second arm. I also suggest using a weapon enchant to make getting his arm off faster if you can.

Same method works for magic, just throw something at him every time you get the vertical slice as it has by far the longest recovery.

Also have you found the second Black Gulch bonfire?

Really enjoying the game so far, but am a little lost within Lost Bastille. So far I have killed the Sentinels and have 5 bonfire's lit, but the niggling feeling that I am missing an area?

i.e. haven't found the key to the doors where the Lost Sinner is, although I've already dealt with the boss.

Any help appreciated, as up to now I've avoided walkthrough's but spent most of last night running around Lost Bastille with no luck as to where I have missed.

Belfry Luna, this is where the key you're missing is located, the only way to access the Belfry is using a Lockstone after the Sentinals boss room.

The room with the Pharros contraption is beneath the bonfire you find after the boss fight.

Have fun with the Gargoyles.

No I haven't found the 2nd Black Gulch bonfire, where is it? I have been running from the first one straight to the fog door, which tbh isn't that hard, just tedious.

Cheers, picked up a lockstone last night so will head there tonight :)

Those Gargoyles won't know what hit them :D

I am enjoying the online aspect a lot more in this game. I am summoning, and being summoned a lot more. It seems a lot easier. I really think that being summoned and beating a boss should restore your humanity though maybe instead of souls.

I'd rather have the souls personally. I'm nearly overloaded with Effigy's (around 20 or so), so I'd always want the souls to level up easier.

Im making progress in a few areas at the same time atm, i went back to try a few path ways from earlier in the game and they just keep going lol so now im wondering if i should fully explore these areas now of continue along what feels like the main path at the moment! I wouldnt want to get to the end without seeing areas but theres always ng+ i suppose! Really want a new weapon for strength at the mo! Traded a boss soul for a nice great shield

I think it would work better if you could use it as an alternate way of regaining humanity. I didn't mean you get an effigy every time, I meant that if you are summoned when hollow, it would regain your humanity instead of giving you souls. Souls when you are already human....atm, I only have one effigy left, so if I die, that's pretty much it.

I knew what you meant, but I'd still rather have the souls personally. I've only used a handful of Effigy's (hence why I have so many) as I don't die all that much. There are a few merchants who sell them as well as I recall, so as long as you don't waste them, the souls you gain from helping people kill bosses will let you gain more Effigy's in the long run.

After spending about 30+ hours on this while I was off, it's safe to say I absolutely love the game. It's very much a good mixture of Demon and Dark Souls and in some respects it has taken the best bits of each.

Majula, despite the size, reminds me a lot of the Nexus. It's your safe zone and where you go to level up. I know some people will see this as a step backwards from Dark Souls, but I honestly don't mind. Normally when I head back to Majula to level up, I'll spend my excess souls at the Blacksmith upgrading a weapon, or buying some extra arrows, so I never feel like I'm wasting my time heading back there. I also like that you can upgrade elemental weapons using normal Titanite shards, with no more need for blue or green Titanite.

I like the fact you can warp to your visited bonfires without needing any items. Given the sheer size of Dark Souls 2, this is definitely a godsend.

I love the fact you can become human easily without having to visit a bonfire. It's always been a pain to become human in Dark Souls, with the intention of getting some help with a boss, only to find you die on your way to the boss fog. At least now, you can clear the area out, use an Effigy outside the boss fog, and not have to worry about dying while you get there.

None of the bosses I've faced so far have felt cheesy or cheap (I'm probably about 13 bosses into it). Some bosses definitely feel like they have been designed with co-op in mind (such as The Pursuer and The Gargoyles), but most can be beaten easily solo when you've learned the attack patterns.

I also love the fact they've increased the fat roll equip limit to 70% from 50%. It of course makes complete sense now you can equip 3 items per hand, but it's still a welcome change. Also, dual wielding weapons is now a very viable way to play thanks to the improved combat. I'm definitely going to look into that more for my 2nd playthrough.

The only thing I can think of that I don't like is that jumping is still as much about luck as it is about skill. I think I died more from jumping off ledges than anything else during my first couple of hours with the game. If they can fix that at all, I'd be very happy!

I just killed The Rotten solo, with the lowest health you can get(with the ring). Very pleased with myself after struggling a lot with it yesterday:)

Perseverance!
