AMD Says GCN Products Will Support DX12 & AMD FreeSync Still Coming

Legit Reviews got a chance to speak with Raja Kadouri after the presentation and we were able to ask him about FreeSync. FreeSync is AMD’s non-proprietary alternative to NVIDIA’s G-Sync displays. Kadouri noted that open standards take time to come to market since they are open and that FreeSync is still alive and kicking. No exact date was given on when AMD FreeSync would be available, but from what we gather we should see something in the first half of this year.

Do monitors have to have some hardware in them for this? Asking as I may aswell postpone an upgrade if this is going to be a game changer (Free-sync/g-sync stuff).

It wont work on existing screens that are not already Free-Sync compatible.

But there is no expensive external hardware needed, varying vblank signals are actually done locally on the GPU and would be sent through the existing DisplayPort v1.3.

Its a technology that was originally intended as a power saving feature and is already in all AMD GPU's from the HD 6000 series up.

What AMD have to do is get Screen vendors to update their firmware to varying vblank standards, a feature that already exists in some Laptop Screens.

In short, if you have a HD 6000 series or later, you already have Free-Sync, you just need a compatible Monitor.

That thread hasn't been added to in 3 Months, its buried god only knows how many pages back, how did you even find it?

There is a thing called "Search" and I typed the word "freesync" in the search and there it was.

If you report your first post, a mod will move it :)

I think its fine, Its not always a good idea to resurrect old extinct threads, especially when they have run off topic with sugar coated arguing, like that one has.

You can't find, bump an old thread and you accessed of necroism, create a new thread and people whine about having duplicate threads.

If I recall Freesync will work with any screen that supports the new VESA standard for dealing with VBLANK intervals.
