Just thought I'd get some of your opinions on this.

Price wise the 780 is pitched against the 290x.

But when I look at the benchmarks, the 290 is more or less a little off the 290x and faster than the 780 which is quite substantially more expensive.

Benchmarks here.

Any thoughts? Why have Nvidia made the 780 so much more than the 290?

Depends on the game, but yes the 290 is generally faster than the 780. Though that's at stock and the 780 has a lot left in the tank.
And Nvidia do it because they can.

Worth noting that the 290's reviewed by anadtech were at 94C so were actually throttling so the core clocks were dropping below the stock clocks, hence those figures are slightly lower than they should be. Of course if you get an AIB card then higher temps will not be an issue.

But are those benchmarks accurate?

Probably accurate at the time, how accurate they are now idk as there will be more gains through driver optimisation.

Surely customers would vote with their wallets?

They will be, at a guess, if it wasn't for mining, the 780 would have been closer priced to the 290 this time, in the US, the 780 is probably cheaper than 290's.

The 780/290, nothing in it tbph whether stock/stable gaming clocks.

If you check benchmarks, the 770 is generally faster then the 280X but clock the pair of them up and the 280X excels. The same is vice versa with the 780/290/X. Out the box, the 290/X is faster than the 780 but clock them both and the 780 excels.

Nvidia charge a lot for their GPU's because people will pay for it even if it's a tiny performance gain over the competition.

If all you care about it benchmarks and price then it's hard to recommend NVidia, they do charge more but they also offer a better overall package.

There's a reason companies like Microsoft use NVidia GPU's to demonstrate PC based software.

I would argue it's more to do with Nvidia being the bigger brand more than better package. Look at the features on both sides these days and they both have there up sides now. I don't think anyone can say Nvidia have better feature's than AMD these days, especially with Mantle and True audio added in to AMD cards. You pick what suit's and go with it.

They are also probably locked into closed doors agreements, like Dell using intel. nVidia are the bigger GPU brand by a long shot, bigger however doesn't always equal better!

Without a competitor they would be lapping up even more of people's £££'s

This. Nvidia like to pretend they are a premium product, the reality is they are no more premium than AMD. they are even made in the same factory by the same people using the same components.

Its the "costs more so must be better" myth.
