Facebook to buy Occulus Rift :/

guys seriously. stop throwing your toys out of the pram. to suggest a VR headset is going to be marketed towards the casual gamers is daft. it'll no doubt still have a high price and only be for hardcore gamers who are willing to spend that kind of money, or businesses which will i'm sure think of neat way to use this.

for instance imagine a live tennis match where they have a 360 view from the stands. viewers can pay a fee to connect their OR to the cameras and then control the view they see as though they are really there, looking left right down and you'll see real people in the seats next to them. people will be able to feel like they are at wimbledon from the comfort of their living room for a tiny cost. expand this to any event, any gallery where the place has been mapped out and you can "walk" around and look at the art work in a different more realistic way.

VR is the future not just for games but many other ways.

eidt: i'd prefer facebook hadn't bought it as i honestly don't see how they have a very great business long term wise and how it fits in to anything else they do, however i'm sure they have something in secret they are planning to do.

It's an amazing to see how negative people perceive Facebook. they really need to rebrand and have facebook as one of the products of the parent company with a bit more universal name

I suspect Facebook are going for the In-app purchases as they know their social network isn't making any money just from advertising. They've got all of that lovely IPO cash.

Errrr, instant no buy.

What drive does Facebook have to improve the device for serious gaming? None.
What drive does Facebook have to invest in the first place? More personal data mining and pushing their own platform.

Absolutely no way I will touch this product now. What went from an exciting development looking to push the forefront of VR Gaming has just been destroyed, instantly.

i seriously hope they just fund the OR and let them do their thing without adding a share and like button on the OR and botching the software!

Sadly i feel this is what will become of the OR

As much as I dislike facebook, I would be wrong to assume how I think it might turn out because I don't, like everyone else.

The tech might have the economical boost it needed, or it might stall it.
The competition might induce more creativity, or it might not.

What I do know is, the current tech can't both be affordable and fit for the general public, it's too costly to get a clear and clean image, something that will take time.

I'd assume the people who originally worked on the OR will still be and that they understand the general populace are now used to high resolution products and wouldn't settle for anything else, but then I remember people like to buy inferior products at much higher costs :(

Either way, I'm not going to kick my feet and throw my toys out of the pram because my base reaction is NOOOOO FFFFFF DON'T LIKE IT. I'll wait and see.

Thing is, reading what Facebook want to end up doing with it (virtual meeting, virtual sporting events) they willmhave to improve and develop then very same things that will make it good for gaming (latency, resolution, fov etc.)

To be frank, i was more worried about Sony/Microsoft as competitors, with facebooks money behind them I see this as far more likely to happen sooner

I will wait and see what the reviews are like, which is what i was going to do anyway, yeah if they try to link the OR to Facebook then that will be a huge turnoff, but who owns OR is irrelevant if the product is the same

So this means facebook will be acquiring John Carmack too. Wonder if they have any plans for making a game? :D.

(Carmack is a programming god who founded id software and made DooM/Quake, which you should all know!).

you mean he was about 10 years ago. :D

How disappointing, die FB. Just die.
+1
guys seriously. stop throwing your toys out of the pram.

I know what your saying I do, however that is gonna be the reaction from a forum of computer geeks who for the most parts are serious gamers. So their gut reaction like mine is, "oh god I hate Facebook". What if they make it that you HAVE to have a facebook account to use it? I feel if they do that, they will lose the high end gamers to as someone said twee gamers. Sorry for ramblings I just woke up. :)

Game spot have just wrote that they will be eventually rebranding it. Honestly, face - book? Makes sense I guess.

Depressing.

It means we might get it a bit sooner I guess, but that's not necessarily a good thing either. We should start a poll for whether anyone can possibly think a worse company to have bought them out.
