funny how clegg keeps saying the eu needs reform, but we arnt allowed a hand in it. gotta love that view.

Good of them to finish the debate just in time for the football.

Clegg is just trotting out the usual EU membership versus isolationism false dichotomy. Trade and cooperation with Europe without political entanglements is not isolation.

The assumption that we can have whatever relationship we want with Europe isn't true either. Like any relationship there is give an take.

Farage is getting it handed to him when it comes to statistics, just proves the ukip research was done on the back of a napkin

I think it said it all with the laws quote, Clegg came out with the House of Commons Library give a 7%, and Farage stated 75% by a UKIP estimate...yeah.

Personally I think it was even, both just generally didn't get the message across very well. Farage too passionate, Clegg quite strict with the facts but not getting them through well enough I suspect.

Exactly this, we struggled to have our sterling over the euro. The only reason we were allowed that is because of our financial support to the EU.

I hope you were not encouraged by Cleggs statistics however. Take the 1 in 7 new businesses are set up my migrants. That can be seen as 1 in 7 new businesses take jobs from British workers. As I can well imagine those new businesses set up will not employ true British workers and will bring in their own.

If it were then it'd be wrong. It's not taking British jobs as they wouldn't exist otherwise - indeed if British workers want to compete and set up their own businesses they can. Migrants give economic growth that wouldn't otherwise be there.

I wouldn't dispute that. My point is that it misrepresents Farage's argument The whole time Clegg was talking about international criminals etc. he was arguing against a strawman.

True, but given we export more to the EU than we import, wouldn't it be in their interest to let us keep the free movement of trade?

Yes, of course. The EU isn't going to shut their border to trade, but having separate systems of tax etc introducing even small percentages of cost can have huge impact for our economy. It's lots of little gains that we may not get in a renegotiated Europe that make British goods more expensive in Europe - lowering demand.

The other thing for someone like me, being a reasonably well skilled IT worker, is that if the UK exits the EU, then my opportunity to get work in Europe is limited. At the moment I can move to Denmark or Germany if I want to and work, making the most of the opportunity for my career.

The whole thing is so tiresome.

Just give the British people a referendum on the current membership agreements, regardless of future proposals / discussions. Generation X et al deserves that right.

It takes jobs as for example a builder from Romania charges less than a British one, thus the British lose out and jobs are lost for British workers. To live at our standard its near impossible to compete with their prices, and creates a race to the bottom. This also use to be a loop hole of course. One way into the country is to have work lined up, what better way then to set up your own small business, or be employed by one doing the same.

I's really important that if a referendum is going to be given that the British public are properly educated to make an informed opinion. At the moment many of the British public are very poorly informed.
