BMW warranty - Why do people purchase?

thanks - yes - I did a quote

and first year would be included with car, I did a quote with the car+12k miles and fully comp was something like 630 - which sounds half reasonable

i have a bmw warranty until may next year ....not sure whether to get a warranty afterwards..only thing is the timing chain issues with the n47 which lingers in my mind , does anyone know if they fixed this issue post 2010 or is it still ongoing issue ?

I have an 07 335i with 50k miles on it (had 44k when I bought it 3 months ago). The AUC warranty will run out in about 9 months and I'm not sure if the mileage will be below or above 60k at that point.

Is the fully comp warranty significantly more expensive when the car hits 60k miles? What's the best way of keeping the costs down and is there a benefit of paying for the warranty monthly instead of in a lump sum?

Yes, it is significantly more expensive over 60k miles. The monthly policy costs a tad more than an annual policy but the benefit is that it's a rolling monthly thing with no annual renewal, so it stays the same price as the mileage climbs. Obviously they could one day change that but you've nothing to lose by protecting yourself at renewal.

I believe the yearly sub policy is transferable though if you sell the vehicle, is that the case with the monthly sub?

So if I renew the warranty at 59,000 miles and join a monthly policy the price should be capped even when it exceeds 60,000?

The monthly trick also works to maintain a comprehensive warranty beyond 100k miles. I have made comprehensive-only claims beyond 100k without any issues at all.

I decide to take a warranty judging how reliable the car has been over a year and the reputation it has for reliability. I know its not a BMW but my Seat Ibiza Cupra with the 1.4tsi and dsg has the potential to make some big bills. This is the horror stories of new engines and gearbox's.

I've had it for 18 months all was ok no issues. Then the dsg started playing up. After many trips to the garage they are replacing the mechatronics unit, which is a £1500 part with no labour.

So when I rang Seat to extend my warranty which has expired on the 22nd the £296 including breakdown to mirror the original warranty it was a no brainer.

Put it this way the car has been in since the 15th December and is still at the Dealer, waiting for parts.

Comprehensive Insured Warranty covers all mechanical and electrical components of your vehicle for defects - except the items listed below:

All exhaust components (except catalytic converter)
Am about to test this, the exhaust startup/loudness flap has gone wonky on my E89 and is making a massive clacking sound when cold or changing gear. The fix is either the actuator or a whole new silencer but a lot of people have got these replaced under warranty anyway so should be interesting.

And I have water in my rear lights. For the 3rd time. Time to get my money's worth on that at least and hope they will fix the flap.

Correct, a monthly policy doesn't have a renewal date, it just continues, whereas the annual policy is renewed once a year.

That's good to know. Do you know if it's possible for me to start a comprehensive monthly policy a short while before my AUC warranty ends? The reason is that I might slightly exceed 60,000 miles just before my AUC warranty ends.

The only other option I have is to stop driving it so much! Unfortunately I'm one of those people who goes out for long drives just for the sake of it. Expensive but fun. :D

I've got a feeling my E92 335i might have the same issue. I've noticed a loud ticking/clacking noise coming from the exhaust when I start it cold but this goes away once I start driving.

Nope, you can't renew until the AUC policy expires sadly.

Peace of mind.

I wouldn't get a warranty from a car dealer though. I bought an alfa romeo from a dealer and the windscreen wiper motor failed the next week, took it back to be fixed under warranty and told "Not a mechanical item therefore not covered"...a motor!

Sorry to bump an old thread but probably the best place to ask.

Just looking at the different options for the comprehensive warranty, I understand paying monthly is the way to go to keep the price fixed, what do people recommend in terms of excess? I was thinking if the highest excess as I'm unlikely to claim regularly. Seem sensible?

And the emergency service, is this worthwhile?

I have been paying for the warranty on my 335i for the best part of 5 years and not a single thing has gone wrong with it.

Having said that my first 911 had over £21k worth of work done under warranty.

The fact you have to pay extra for an expensive warranty says to me that they are unreliable and poorly built, and warranty costs would need to be considered as an essential running cost such as servicing.
