AMD Vesuvius R9 295 X2 Inbound

Meet the new Radeon R9 295X2.

Unsurprisingly, our Chinese friends managed to snap a photo of the new card regardless of any documents they signed.

The new dual-GPU card is not black and red as all reference models from R200 series. Instead, we have a silver and black elements with a red fan in the middle. The cooler shroud is made of plastic and metal, similarly to GeForce TITAN cooling system, but I can’t really say it looks better. This cooler reminds me of previous generation XFX cooling systems, which were replaced with much better looking ones. Or maybe AMD had to reduce the cost of the new cooling mechanism to make the card cheaper?

The hybrid cooling solution has been equipped with an external pump, just like ARES II was. The Radeon pump is slightly smaller, does it mean it generates less heat? To be honest, I’m not even sure whether there are two fans on the pump, because pictures only show one side.

Interestingly we have just two 8pin power connectors, which could suggest that power consumption has been optimized for this dual-GPU configuration, or simply the clock speeds have been dramatically reduced.

Lastly it’s worth to mention that Radeon R9 295X2 comes with a backplate, an essential item for a model with 8GB of RAM.

By the way, you can easily notice four mini-DisplayPorts and one DVI-D output I have told you about yesterday.

Not sure that 120 rad will be enough for this beast.
 
Yes, instead of answers, this picture gives us more questons... I think what AMD will shoot for is a card that is in the 80 C range for temps.

My big Question is about the 2 8 pin connectors and that is a big question on other forums with 7990 owners saying their card takes 3 8 pins... So are these two 290x's going to be gimped somehow?

Also, is that card a foot long? Because that looks much longer than my tri-x 290.
 
2x8pin makes 300W, plus 75W from the socket makes 375W. Remove power for the memory and that lost in heat from the regulators etc, plus the fact that I imagine these are very carefully binned GPUs running very undervolted means I suspect the rad will 'only' have to dissipate 300W at most. Yes that's still loads for a 12cm rad, but we also need to see how thick it is to get a proper perspective...

Reference 7990 only has 2 x 8pin connectors and is 300mm long. Most 7990's were refernce bar the Devil 13 and a power colour one and these may have had 3 8 pins - not sure. Mine does run in the high 70's low 80 degree range.
 
I don't like the styling, not a lot wrong with it, i think the main thing is that horrible grill over the fan, just removing that would already make it look less tacky, more aggressive grooving / styling on the black inlays it would actually look quite good.
 
That has to be fake...

ASUS released a special ARES edition 7990 which had a single 120mm rad and that used three 8pin connectors.

Seriously two 8pins would only give it 75w more headroom than a standard R290 and this one has an extra GPU and a water pump to power...

Tough to tell from those pics, but it looks as if the rad is about the same thickness as the card itself. So would put it about 30mm. Fin density etc would have to be take in to account, but it doesn't appear to be an awful lot of shrface area to dissipate the heat from a couple of hawaii chips, especially if overclocked - which lets face it, any enthusiast will be doing!
 
Assuming that the pics are real and its not an elaborate April fools joke from someone with too much time on their hands.

My god its ugly.
 
That's one hell of a long card... Wouldn't it be better if they made it wider? It's nice to see watercooling for it however, would really help cool that beast down.

Obviously they intend to allow it to run up to 95c...again.

The shrowd is nice but poor show on the radiator front. Rad only looks from what I can see to be 30mm thick paired with what looks like a de-badged phobya gsilent either 1600 or 2000 rpm
 
I take it the big players will all be releasing a full-cover block for this? Seems such a shame that anybody planning on buying this and slapping a block on it still needs to pay a premium for that hybrid monstrosity.

Interestingly, if that benchmark is anything to go by it would appear to be ~14% faster than a stock 290X CF setup at 4K, so would that point to a 14% factory overclock on the cores? Around 1140Mhz out the box?
