A 14-year-old Dutch girl who sent a terror threat to American Airlines as a Twitter “joke” has been arrested by police in Rotterdam, it has been reported.

What an utterly stupid thing to do. What on earth would posses anyone to think this would be a good idea? Aren't teenagers savvy to the consequences of posting offensive material on social networks?

I'm thinking it'll be a slap on the wrists and an already public humiliation - could the Dutch authorities throw the book at her?

Don't really see the issue with her arrest.

At 14 you are easily old enough to be part of a genuine terrorist plot. A lot of smart 14 year olds could make bombs, etc.

She deserves public humiliation, and a major slap on the wrists (Ergo, scare the living crap out of her), what she did was frankly outrageous.

Stupid thing to do, seems like a rather pithy second reply from American Airlines mind.

Edit: ignore, got my chronology wrong.

Stupid thing to do but still I think going as far to arrest her a step too far.

They shouldn't take these things so seriously, what they gonna do if someone tweets this type of joke from 50 or even a 100 spam accounts? How much man power will that use up?

It's already happening quite a few people seem to think it's funny to send them a load more.

Yeah, saw a news report of a copycat doing it too.

I don't get these people, are they really that stupid? Do people live under a rock a cave or something? Don't they see the News reports or have any common sense?

Just boggles my mind.

The other American Airlines Tweet goofup/hack was pretty amusing. Totally not work or family safe though :p

Now, however, other teenagers have started lobbing bomb threats at American Airlines. Somewhat incongruously, those joking threats spiraled into an explicit photo being tweeted by US Airways in the process.

Tweets that mirrored Sarah's original tweet started coming in this morning, aimed at American Airlines (and even others like Southwest) and all as if to dare the companies to report them to the authorities.

@AmericanAir You really seem to not care that i'm about to bomb your plane that's headed to Paris. Btw, my name is Ahmed.

However, one user went so far as to taunt the airline by asking American Airlines why a plane wound up in her vagina with a very NSFW picture. That particular taunt somehow wound up in a series of support tweets sent out by US Airways. Though the tweet has long been deleted, it made the rounds on Twitter like wildfire.

A general point: on a weekly basis I give thanks that I cleared my teen years before social media was invented. Imagine all the cringe-worthy, stupid things we did as kids being passed around internationally and staying online for all to see, forever. Eek!

What like putting a wheeled office chair in school in the wood floor corridors then holding a fire extinguisher and firing it for a short jet propelled blast down said corridor?

Thems were the times :D
