2014 Chilli Growers Thread

Something odd going on with a few of the leaves on my plants.

(All goronong and bhut except bottom right which is aji)

Leaves by -neilgates-

Had 2 days in the greenhouse this weekend, doesn't look like sunburn..

The whiteness is perlite dust where drips of condensation fell and splashed back up.

I can't be 100% certain, but it looks like something is munching the leaves, but not all the way through. I doubt you need to worry about them.

Last few weeks I have been buying the small packs of chillies from Aldi and have been enjoying them in various meals. Then I remembered OCUK have a chilli growing thread! So, as a complete and utter novice at growing anything, literally never grown anything just have a house plant I water. How can I get started with this? I quite like the idea of growing my own.

What time of year do I need to plant?
How long does it take?
How many can I get from a single plant?
How difficult are they to grow?
What kind of conditions do they need?
What to grow most importantly? I don't like anything seriously hot so none of that ghost or bell thing what ever it is :D

Right ok... I'll go search the internets! How much are propagators generally? Don't want to be churning out 100's of the little buggers :D

If you get some seeds sown now you will get some fruit but you might also want to look at getting some small plug plants form a garden centre. I normally sow mine in February or early March. Chillies are a relatively slow growing plant. So the more time they have, the better. I sowed a little later than usual this year, but I'm sure ill have more than enough chillies again.

How long does it take?
Varies depending on variety. The hotter chillies tend to take longer to fruit.

How many can I get from a single plant?
Maybe around 20-30 chillies? But it all depends on the variety. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I normally grow around 6 plants and that is more than enough for me!

How difficult are they to grow?
Not difficult at all IMO. There is plenty of information online if you're ever in doubt with anything. They're quite tolerant to conditions. You just need to remember to water them and give them some food once they begin fruiting.

What kind of conditions do they need?
A warm place with plenty of sun. I've grown some of mine solely on a window sill for the past few years.

The advantage of growing seeds is that you can have anything you want t. If you buy from a garden centre you're limited as to what you can buy. As always, have a look online at the available seeds. There are loads! Take note of the scoville rating of the chillies to give you an idea of heat.

Sell Plugs which are sprouted and about 4inch tall chilli's that you just need to pot if you are late to the game or just want a head start and have a greater range than garden centres (I'm currently growing the chefs 6 pack)

Or you can just start from seeds. medusa chilli's are meant to be easy to grow, they look colourful, plenty of chilli's and they arnt hot either > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa_pepper

Is it worth me getting that grow kit from world of chillies? I am thinking that and the chefs pack http://worldofchillies.com/chilli_s...scollection/chefs-chilli-seed-collection.html that just leaves me with pots to get doesn't it?

I would heed the advice about getting plants or plugs (seedlings), as you don't really have enough time to germinate seeds. People start germination at December and you will struggle to get anything from seed this late in the season. While chilli plants do usually put out fruits and flowers quite early, the fruits take time to grow and ripen.

If it were me choosing for me:
World of chillies - Live plants x 3
http://worldofchillies.com/chilli-plants/buy-chilli-plants.html

1 x Seranno (on my own wish list for next year - mexican food chilli)
1 x Pequin (I am growing Duke Pequin, I think this is the same - wild and pretty!)
1 x Pusa Jwala (I have these seeds for next year - a great Indian cuisine chilli!)

or

1 x Jalapeño
1 x Cayenne
1 x Thai Demon

The first 3 would be the ones I got, not too hot, good variety of strains, should be quick growing.

Got a couple of ring of fire seeds that are starting to push out a root :D

On the other hand my smaller Romano has gone very droopy.

e: the Romano looks like it may have edema. Which is slightly odd as it gets no more water than the other.

e2: gave all the plants their quota of chilli focus last night (before I found out it was edema) and this morning it's perked up. :confused:

My remaining 8 Aji Limons are doing ok 3-4 aren't as far on as the other seedlings but the other half have start to sling out their 2nd set of leaves.

In the last day or so 5/8 Scotch bonnets have come bursting forward as seedlings and look nice and healthy

Little update;

The ones on the dining room table seem to be doing the best;

The plants on the window sill aren't looking bad either;

And the ones in the "greenhouse" are coming along OK;

The plants outside have had it a little rougher but I'm hoping this decent weather will pick them up a bit!

Looking good, mine are getting leafy now rather than tall, one thing I wonder though is about re potting. I've gone from 3-6inch and a one or two roots are already showing out the bottom of the 6". Last year I made the mistake of putting some in really big pots and these things grew to be about 4 foot tall and were just far too big. Is there any harm in just leaving them in the final pot whatever size that will be for me? surely becoming root bound isn't an issue if you keep feeding the soil?

looking forward to some more greenhouse time over the next couple of days.. sunday and monday look a touch cack though.

Its ok as far as I know, you just end up with a smaller plant and likely less fruit. As you say though quickly gets out of hand if they get huge indoors haha.

First loop from this batch of seed (the Hungarian wax shown on the last page) :)

Got 3 Ring of Fire seeds with roots just gone into pots too.

Pretty sure the larger Romano is budding too..

Looking good Neil! I have been picking out the buds on mine up to now, as I want the plants to develop further before fruiting. I have a couple of plants which are now big enough to allow them to flower :p

How many will you have if they all germinate?
