I bought DS 1 and 2 today on the Origin sale. Installed both games but when I went to play them I encountered the same problem in both games.
I click play, the games load up, but when the message on screen tells you to "Press any key", the games crash with the Windows message,"exe. has stopped working". So I tried DS 1, same result.
So I tried my bootleg copies and still the same problem. Now, I know these worked but now they don't. So I checked the dates on the game saves. The last date saved was Sept. '13. By this time, I was running Windows 8 and everything was fine. But now, with Win 8.1, I can`t get pass the " Press any key" section of the games. I have even tried Win 7&8 compatibility mode, but no change.
All my other games on Origin work fine.
I'm going to do a fresh install of Win 7 on a partition, with only these games installed and see what happens.
In the meantime, anyone have any fixes or suggestions?

I spent 3 hours chatting to someone from Origin, which turned out to be a waste of time. The things they had me do, I found in a thread on the EA forum, which was a year old and did'nt solve the problem then.

Dead Space 2 defo works for me on Windows 8.1 as I just started playing it a couple days ago. It is the Steam version however. I don't know if maybe you are running any programs that generate an overlay such as fraps or the OSD on Trixx or Afterburner etc. if so, try disabling these as they sometimes cause problems with certain games.

This is Dead space surely?

Yes, it was a long day. :D

This was what I was thinking. Do a fresh install of windows, with nothing but the games installed.
I did a clean boot, DS1 lasted 4 seconds longer before crashing a again.

Well I can confirm all 3 work fine on 8.1 for me. I know that is not much help but it does tell you it is not 8.1 that is the issue.

I realise that, just in the process of doing a fresh install of my OS. Will install Origin client and the DS games. If all is well, will then start adding all my other software, until the issue recurs. It's going to be a long day. :D

Dead space games had issues with controllers being plugged in if they hadn't been configured using the INI file if I recall correctly. Unplug any controllers and see if the game will launch, if it does you need to Google what INI changes need to be made.

I don't have any controllers plugged in.
Just done a fresh OS install on a small partition on my ssd and all 3 games are working. So will just leave the partition and use that when I want to play any of these games. Just can't be bothered to add all my software to see what is causing the conflict, it will take to long. Might do it in stages, when I have nothing else to do.
