Caution Long Post ~ Bullet pointed at end:
I recently posted on here with a somewhat similar topic but the budget has changed as has my initial ideas.

Recap from previous thread: Learning to drive age 28, enjoying it and looking forward to the freedom of driving, family home being sold, buying a flat and car.

Without going into detail due to family pressure and the simple fact when I buy something I tend to keep it for a long while (with a car likely 5+ years assuming the repairs aren't ridiculous) a budget of £12k+ .The + is up to me really, the 12k is set and any money saved from that will not be available to me otherwise, the only exception buying a silly car I really want and having a few thousand set aside for repairs, I will however have a few extra £ around if something really catches me, and this money would otherwise go towards large speakers, vibrating Lazy-boys etc so for the purpose of this situation - disposable income and I would appreciate my car more.

A few key things I wasn't aware of and has changed things for me:

Insurance quotes are much cheaper than I first thought. For reference an 09 2L BMW Z4 is £1050, Fiesta 10 plate £700, Toyota GT86 £800. Up to £1.1k a year insurance is fine for me and much cheaper than I was expecting. The cars above are random examples just to give an idea to a point. To begin with I was quite unhappy about the idea of having a hatchback for 5 years + as I simply dislike them, visually they have never appealed to me and due to this I have made the decision that despite it being my first car I want a car I like the look of and the insurance costs aren't stopping me.

I like coupe's and saloons but would like to stick to coupes simply as they are generally smaller and I don't have the need for a big car. However, I don't need 4 doors, 4 seats would be nice but is not a necessity if it was the right car. And believe it or not I would like it to be fairly economical, I am not expecting hatchback levels but I like the look of the BMW 1 Coupe 120i. I only do about 5000 miles per year (4 mile round trip to work, general trips but look forward to starting some long drives although 5000 is a safe estimate for a few years) so I am looking for petrol and manual.

I know it is a very odd situation and I would just go for a cheap run around at least at first if the money could be saved for a later date but it won't be so I will spend what is available now and I will get something I like. I don't want a ridiculously powerful car. I think 2.0L would be about the maximum. I want it to be comfortable on short and long journey and ideally min 30 mpg on urban journeys and although its attached to the mpg in most cases i'd rather not pay over £250~ tax per year simply because.

I have looked over many options, some worth considering some ridiculous and have got quotes on most for insurance. I am also hoping that the manufacturer warranty is similar to that of something like BMW where it can be bought additionally and generally do what it says, I know horror stories vary from make to make but I am hoping for as few problems as possible and reliability.

Bullet Pointed version:
  • 28 Years Old - First time driver - Insurance up to £1.1k (Z4 - £1050 - 350z £1150).
  • £12k spend with extra money available - how much depends on the car.
  • 5000 miles per year - comfortable on short and long journeys - avg 30 mpg.
  • Coupe 2 or 4 door - 4 seats preferable but not a necessity - reliable - warranty?

I have looked at a vast range of ideas, as I said stupid to possible:
BMW 120i Coupe - I like how it looks, small, economical, enough power if I need it but not too much. 12k nets me a 2010 sub 45k miles example, £1k more would hopefully get me leather interior which I would like as well as bluetooth/Idrive. £715 insurance
Nissan 350z - Looks lovely, can get a very nice example and can keep a few k in the bank for repairs. But definately too much power for a first time driver, insurance is about £1150 lowest so right at the top end. Also not comfortable on long journeys, poor MPG. I could go to a 370z but honestly prefer the below if I was looking to spend that kind of money.
Toyota GT86 - This will obviously require me to spend extra but I can afford it at around £18k. Looks lovely, not that powerful (which is a complaint by most peoples standards), Toyota 5 year warranty so any war will have around 3.5 years warranty left, reliable non turbo engine, Insurance is about £815 but I don't really want to spend another £6k.
I have considered Boxters but have never been keen on Porsche's as well as too powerful, service costs being well above the norm etc etc

I have looked at Celica's, RCZ, CLC, many Z4's (am keen but trying to be sensible), don't like MX5's.

So there you go, weird situation but hopefully some ideas or decision making posts will come of it.

Thanks for any help!

For 5k a year miles you would be bonkers to go diesel. The E46 isn't a bad suggestion but I'd probably recommend a 330i. They do around the same MPG as a 325i yet have more power. Might be a bit older than you were after though.

If you're considering buying it for 5 years, I'd look for a coupe with a bit of space:

I don't know much about e92s so I'm sure someone will be along to rip apart my decision due to having the wrong i-drive system or something but I'd much prefer a 3series over a 1 series. The 325i won't exactly drink fuel either and you do so few miles it won't matter.

Alternatively if you don't want space, test drive a Honda S2000 - if power scares you, all you have to do is keep it below 5000rpm :D

None of these cars are going to do 30mpg urban.

Also, coupes are generally not smaller than saloons. As an example the 3 Series coupe is actually longer than the saloon.

As above 30mpg urban never going to happen, particularly not in anything 6 cylinder.

Of the cars you're looking at I wouldn't spend £12k on a 350z, that's got to be close to 370z money?

120 coupe don't waste your time when a 125 coupe would be similar cash to buy and probably to insure - it won't put you in the nearest hedge if you're sensible and leave on the AIDS

Gt86 I guess would be a possibility if you decided to spend more, though I've only ever sat in one not driven.

To be honest there are loads of coupes with 2 seats or 4 that you could buy at £12k+ that would be a "wow" sort of car for any first time driver. I suppose insurance is the driver...though that confuses me a bit as you're insisting on a 12k spend, talking about going to £18k then worrying about insurance and tax, an extra couple of hundred on either surely makes zero difference?

why is the money only available for a one time purchase?
and is the budget 12k or 18k?
If you want a fast car, get a fast car - if you think you'll crash it, don't waste whoevers money you are spending and go with the cheap run around idea for a year or so until you have some road experience...
why the road tax/mpg requirements? you've got a decent budget, and are doing no miles so those two things shouldn't really hold you back imo.

something cheapo! after a few years get something nice. i passed my test with no minors, then did pass plus and then got a car. thought i was quite good at driving and was around 20at the time so thought i wasn't stupid... i crashed it just before a year was up, then crashed the next one a year later. learnt from the two mistakes not crashed in over 5 years *touch wood*. for this reason if you could re-do things id have got a cheaper car to start with!

VW Scirocco?

Don't hotlink images - Rilot

£12k would get you a 3 year old 200bhp TSi model like the one I used to have. Very nice motors. Handle really well and are FWD so would suit a first time driver better than RWD IMO. Fairly practical and ecomical as well for a coupe.

630i recommended as a first car- Really?
If a sizeable amount of cash must be spent, I'd recommend something like a new Astra. It is a good looker and is available in 1.4T 180 versions so plenty of power for a first time driver.

I understand that the OP wanted to spank £12000 on a first car but I really don't feel a 325M Sport or 630i are really what I'd recommend.
I think my recommendation would be to a pristine 1.9TDI Golf for a year to become a more experienced driver then find a newer/premium vehicle in summer 2015.

On a side note there is no such thing as too much power for a first time driver. What you are thinking of is a 19 year old who is unable to control his urges to show off to his friends :p.
A 350Z can be driven at the speed limit you know :):P. Still would not recommend one for a new driver mind...

Thanks for the replies. I knew a few would point at the money but the money is there to buy a car not run it for years so don't want to be spending lots on servicing, insurance, tax needlessly especially if I'm paying 12k for a car. Budget is 12k as in OP but as in OP I can add more money if it warranted it. And of course I can spend less on a car but the money saved won't go to me so I will spend as much of it on the car as possible.

I know 3 serie's coupes are big but that's why I suggested the 1 series as that is smaller, as are most coupes when compared to a 3 series BMW but that's all people have really recommended lol and the ones with the bigger engines. If I'm spending 12k unless it was like a 350z which is no longer made I'd rather not get a car older than 09/10. And if I got a BMW I'd go for the 1 series simply due to being smaller and less common than the 3 series. Sorry boys!

Scirrocco looks just like a hatchback to me despite being a coupe but nicer than the usual. And hell no to the golf lol

Edit: and looking through the auto trader links most have 70k+ miles. I though the price for warranty almost doubled over 60k miles? And 1 was auto lol I am getting a lot of help to buy the car but running it for the next few years are down to me. Hence not wanting to spend a fortune especially when putting so much into a car to begin with as it should net me some reliability, mpg wouldn't really make much difference but if I decide I adore driving and start going for regular long journeys I don't wanna wish I'd got something more economical at that stage. Technically im after a sports car I suppose but these days thereare more doing good mpg than ever before. At this rate will just look for a Z4M as I was worried about being silly with power lol

just for the sake of being different a 2006/7 ford mustang. Seriously cool coupe and a stand out first car.

I think a 350 would be fine and i wouldn't be too concerned about the power as a first time driver.

What about an MX5?

If your after a Z4M but are worried about the power, the MX5 seems logical.

It's running costs are relatively normal also.

Why the Z4M? Why not a regular Z4?

£12k wouldn't really get you a V8 and it's a nightmare getting insured on one (or it will be considering it's his first car). As much as I love mine it's the absolute last thing I would ever suggest as a first car.

As in OP dislike the MX5, regardless of performance they just look too dainty.

I said the Z4M as a bit of a joke, as my initial worries were that I would get something too powerful but as this is this particular forum most have just used to as an excuse to chuck a 3 series BMW with the biggest engine they can find in the ring, despite saying I wanted a coupe because it was smaller I get reminded the 3 series coupe is bigger than the 3 series saloon....well that kinda defeats the point of a small coupe and taking 2 doors off the 3 series saloon to fit into the coupe bracket isn't really what I was after lol

As the consensus don't seem to give the power a second thought I won't. Mustang is my dream car, but was trying to be sensible to a point. Decent manual mustang + insurance is a different league of budget and I don't want something that powerful for my first car.
