Time for a laugh - First Car £12k+ - Age 28 - Coupe

I'm 5'7 and have small friends :D

Also really wouldn't be taking more than 1 person most of the time, the extra seats are simply just in case and also as they tend to fold down to allow a decent size space if I did need to transport anything.

At the moment its between the Audi TT 2.0 2010+ or the BMW Coupe 120i/125i similar age. With the Audi starting about 3k more for what i'm after but features nicer interior. Warranties for both seem very similar. I will definitely test drive both although hope they're reasonably close as don't fancy a 100+ mile journey as the first! The BMW might be a bit harder to come by close as seem rarer in the 1 series.

Having a look at the new shape Audi TT or at least the 2010 one I don't think its what i've seen, it was definitely an Audi Coupe but thinking it was maybe a new shape A5 as the TT still doesn't look great. The BMW imo is much nicer so think I will concentrate my efforts on finding a good example of those.

Just as I noticed they are very cheap considering the year but how do Alfa Romeo's compare nowadays? As they are newer and cheap I may answer my own question but the 159/GT do look very nice :p

You really don't need the warranty on a 125 - tbh I'm not sure I'd take one on a TT, but again if you buy approved used you'll be covered anyway

I would expect an Alfa GT or Brera (google both) to be available easily in your budget and cost a similar amount to a 125i or TT to run.

The Alfa GT isn't a 6k car never mind a £12k one and the Brera really is just a massive disappointment to drive tbh.

Both look good, the gt drives quite well with the right engine but just no for this kind of budget ( for me)

Fairly rubbish cars though, no?

They are showing their age (both need replacing badly) and they lack in driving dynamics and decent powerful engines but one of the main criteria the OP is looking for is style and looks then both could be considered.

I wouldn't buy one and neither would 75% of the people on the forum as we'll worry about an extra 25 bhp from a better engine or the interior quality not being Audi quality or the handling when pushing the car to the limit isn't great - but the OP might like the look of one, see he gets more Alfa than Audi or BMW for his money and consider a test drive.

For the OP a Brera would be a much better car than a Boxster, Mustang or some of the other crazy suggestions earlier on in the thread.

Agreed, but both the 125 coupe and scirocco are really much better all rounders.

The Brera really isn't very good. It looks fantastic, has a fantastic gearchange and everything else is.....massively disappointing

VOLVO C30 2.0 R DESIGN 3dr (2012) 12k It's a hatchback...
Citroen DS4 1.6 THP 16V 200 DSport 5dr (2012) 12k 5 door? He wants a coupe...
SUBARU Impreza 5 Door Hatchback 2.5 WRX 5 DOOR HATCHBACK (2010) 11k OP not bothered by performance and wants a coupe, yet you suggest a turbo nutter 5 door hatchback...
Vauxhall VX 220 Turbo - 2003 - 14,300 miles (2003) 13k OP not bothered by performance...
HATCHBACK 1.6 John Cooper Works 3dr [Chili/Media Pack] (2008) 11.5k Not a coupe?
Wildcard:
LAND ROVER FREELANDER 3.2 i6 HSE 5dr Auto HST BODYSTYLING KIT (2007) 11.5k You would have been closer to his requirements if you suggested a moon buggy

I think there is a reason none of these cars have been suggested yet.

It’s called options, The OP has no idea what he what’s that’s why he is asking for ideas on an internet forum.
You give him different options he might look in a different direction, one that he had not originally come up with. (Especially with this been his first car)
Options and ideas.
5 years ago I was looking at getting a caterham. But did not whant the hassle of the kitcar so looked into vx220 turbos as a good replacement that could be used every day. While searching for them I clicked a link and bam a 7 series bmw. Less than 48h later that’s what I had. Something complaeetley different to what I originally looking for and I am glad I did change up.
2 years ago I was looking at brand new Nissan Navarra’s a week later I got a 7 year old Passat estate desiel. Something completely different to what I originally looking for… Options. That is all I am giving…. Anyway.

Option that fills everything the OP WAS ASKING FOR other than 1 small detail “comfortable on long journeys” which I don’t think it’s going to be good for driving to the south of France in but you cannot have everything.
smart fortwo coupé In budget good mpg good for short journeys coupe 2 door he said 4 seats were not necessity reliable with warranty brand new car…
Could even get a 2 year old one and an extended warranty and then use the ££££ saved to get a rental car if he is planning on any road trips.
“4 mile round trip to work”
http://tools.mercedes-benz.co.uk/current/smart/pricelists/smart-fortwo.pdf
http://uk.smart.com/
Even still have the £99 per month offer (0% apr) still on and I bet you could haggle the deposit down or get some extras or something
Also the Insurance should be well less than £1.1k so the £££ saved there can get him some nice rental cars over some weekends or something. i mean really how many long road trips are you going to be taking per year/Month

Learning to drive, first car, and wants a BMW. Christ Almighty.

Get a ford fiesta, trash it with your terrible driving, come back in a few years time. You have quite literally no idea what you want, and this thread is insane.

+1

Some of the picks are daft. I am an active car enthusiast who owns a rwd track car and stuff but even now I would not be picking things like Z4’s and GT86 and the like as my daily driver …. There pretty driver focused cars your all suggesting this new driver to get as his 1st car. That is going to 90% of the time take him 4 mile to work and back. i still like my smart fortwo coupé idea tbh and if i did not already have the passat i would deffo be looking at them 99 a month deals they have on for nipping to work and stuff.

Wouldn't bother spending the extra few K on a GT86 for a warranty, 4 trips just to replace a faulty radio and 2 months of constant phonecalls, emails, tests and legal threats to get a gearbox replaced (and this was Toyota head office, not just the dealer). Also had issues with the rear hatch, door seals, fuel pump and another dodgy gearbox but fortunately I got to give that one back. Buy the GT86 if you want some fun, but it won't seat 4 adults and if there are faults you will be fighting to get anything fixed.
