Not the most edifying spectacle but ultimately the correct decision. A lot is being mede of the rebuilding job required at United. Yes its true the team has been stagnating in a footballing sense for some time. Ferguson was unable to buy the sort of players required to replace Ronaldo and had resorted to a more pragmatic approach. Initially in the Champions League but increasingly in the domestic competition also. Hence the reliance on Rooney on the left side, Valencia for his defensive ability and often a lone striker. Moyes inherited those personnel and to an extent that style of play but did nothing to suggest he could enchance the teams play.
It is hard to identify anything that Moyes did that could be considered a good decision. Time will tell if the kings ransom paid to Rooney will have any dividend. Whilst at times he has been United best player, the context for that judgement is hardly compelling evidence of a world class player.
Other monumental **** ups
- The signing of Fellaini for £27m. Clearly this player is a level short of the upper echelons of European football. In defence of Moyes he clearly identified that central midfield was weakening area and that at times United had become a bit "soft" in that department. However when your initial targets are Fabregas, Tiago and the other lad from Villareal (all attacking CMs) then it only ever looked like desperation signing Fellaini for that sort of fee when he was available for at least £5m less.
- Not keeping Meulensteen. Pretty much everyone you listen too rates this guy as a top European coach. Ok so he maybe wanted a shot at a managers job but Moyes replaced him with very uninspiring characters. He even picked the wrong Neville (no disrespect Phil)
- Allowing the club captain to announce his departure mid way through the season. To be fair Vidic is a true professional but this alone illustrated that Moyes had lost control and respect in the dressing room. I can't ever remember a situation where that has been allowed to happen in the past.
- Complete inability to identify what was causing the sterile nature of United's attacking play. The ponderous Carrick and complete lack of pace, movement (aside from when Welbeck played) from those ahead of him has left the Champions look like mid table quality. As stated before - most true United fans will have seen this for some years as players like, Young, Valencia have been signed as the creative/wide options but where Moyes failed was that he kept trying the same things over again and expecting a different result.
- Spunking £37m on a player that he didnt really need but was available. The only reason for United to sign Mata should have been that he fitted with the direction of play that Moyes wanted to develop. Unfortunately both he and rooney and Kagawa want to play the same role. Sunday was evidence of this yet again where there was next to no space for these players to operate in. Mata made sense if Rooney was to allowed to leave. there is no doubting his (Mata's) quality but he is not as versatile a player as Fabregas for example.
- Seemingly alienating Ryan Giggs. Inside sources seem to suggest that the fall out came not over Giggs game time but on the conservative nature of Moyes training. ie defensively focussed. Its not the United way proclaimed Ryan. He was right. Henry Winter wrote a interesting piece on Giggs and his qualities suggesting that he may have the minerals to be United's manager at some point in the future. For the short term i think i might prefer him to remain as no.2
- The stats don't lie. The performances have been bad and uninspiring. Seeing Bayern take the urine at old Trafford, defeats to City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton, Tottenham, Olympiakos. Last minute capitulations to Sunderland, West Brom, Fulham. Playing poorly is one thing but the level of defeats this season compounds the fact that they are painful to watch.
- Everton was the final straw. For a number of reasons. Everton are not a great side (sorry Toffees). They are decent but not great. Martinez however out thought Moyes and illustrated the deficiencies in the former United Manager's outlook. It was telling that in the build up Baines commented that Everton are not now set up to counteract the opposition but to play their own way. That i am afraid sums up why Moyes was the wrong man for United.
I do feel a little sorry for the man. As many said last season. Following Fergie was not the time to get the United job. However I saw nothing in anything Moyes did to suggest that more time would have given United fans what they crave. Not trophies first and foremost but attacking football that gets you on your feet. The United of the past 2-3 seasons have had me slumped in my seat far too often. Hopefully that can start to change now.
