You are correct; it isn't truly necessary, but nor is it incorrect 
Pre-/descriptivism is, to my understanding, more related to the structuring of the sentence with regards to preposition usage, splitting/non-splitting of infinitives, use of passive voice, "I" as a pronoun, the location of the words within the sentence etc more so than the use of punctuation - I am, however, happy to be corrected.
