Going to keep this as short as I can with the most relevant Information.

Just got done watching the Mayweather Boxing match, I started to browse the internet then all of a sudden I see Smoke coming from the top of my case, and the PC just randomly turned off.

I thought it was the house having a electric short somewhere so I look down to my router to see if that was off to indicate a power failure, however it was on, so was the Tv connected to the PC. I thought how strange.

I flipped the switch off on the back of my Power supply, opened up my case to see what the burning smell was, and everything look alright.

I had my hand over the power switch to turn it off if things went very bad, So I go ahead and turn my PC on, and about 1 second in to its power up, the north motherboard heat sinks, started to spark, I am not taking small little ones, I am taking ones that covered the whole of the output section of the motherboard, any longer and the PC would have caught on fire.

I took it off as soon as I saw the sparks, and a strong burning smell came from Inside of my PC, and now I have disconnected everything, and here I am writing this.

I have had this PC for around 18 months. Never had any problems, only with the original power supply going kaput, so had to buy a corsair CX 750 watt power supply to replace it, that was around 4 months ago.

What Can I do/Shall I do? Shall I ring up MSI and can I ask for compensation? I bought the motherboard from Overclockers, will my CPU be damaged due to the sparks/fire?

user error
was the first puff of smoke not good enough for you ??

RMA the motherboard and pray to god the ram and CPU still works.

Thats what i would do, unless stated they cover you exploding other components through stupidity/nievity, i wouldn't push it or start quoting EU nonsense over it.

This was after my mates left, and they all smoke, so I honestly thought it was a ciggerate still lit on the windowsill behind the PC, because the smoke was on the top. It was faint smoke, you had to concentrate to see there was smoke.

Could do with more details about your system and maybe some images of the area damaged.

I think there is the potential for this to happen if you are running one of those AIO liquid coolers with a heavy overclock as this will mean the motherboard components providing the power to the cpu might get no cooling at all.

No point asking for compensation if you have no idea whether the other components have been damaged.

Come to think of it, it was like a small little line of faint smoke. I aint stupid, If there was smoke coming from my PC through the top fans, I wont turn it on again

I also wanted to add, THERE WAS NO OVERCLOCK, just the standard clock for the 3570k with a zalman aftermarket heatsink on there, and there seems to be no visible damage from the front of the motherboard.

I have yet to check the back

Same happened to my MSI Z77 MPower. It's seems from a bit of research that it is a common fault on them....I returned it for a replacement.
