Hi All,

I recently bought a few games from CEX (online) using a voucher i had and all seemed to work except Skyrim.. When i try and register the CD key online its says its a duplicate? I've been informed by CEX to contact steam support with proof of purchase (i sent photos of the box / key and invoice) but they seem to have ignored my support requests?

What options do i have from here?

I would get my money back from CEX as it's obviously been used!! and don't buy pc games from there again...

Are they correct by saying Steam should transfer the key to the current owner? i.e. me?

Lolnope.

It's bound to the original account as such with all Steam games. You cannot change which account that CD key is tied to unless you genuinely added it to an account by mistake, and had not launched the game on the account you added it to.

I've noticed on some Steam threads that people have been issued the key if they can prove the purchase is genuine and remove it from the previously registered account. I assume no one here has had any success with that?

Were the games all new and sealed?

I think they indicate it is a sealed game in the title with this - (S)

Any steam games should be sealed really as once its been activated and tied to an account, thats it, the serial is now allocated to that account and whoever owns it. I doubt Steam support will do much but its worth a try.

I have bought some PC games from them before including Steam games and iirc they arrived sealed. I think it is the same case when selling games to Cex, they do not accept unsealed Steam games but I may be wrong.

Either way, it seems they have sent you a used steam key game, you could try getting another one from Cex but they probably dont accept returns for the same reason, you may have activated it yourself and trying to get money back.

No it was not sealed.. i was suspicious as to why they were able to sell pre-owned PC titles considered they are linked to accounts (most are these days considering Steam / Origin and U-Play are the most popular choices).

The other games i bought.. Titanfall and Mirrors edge both registered on Origin fine as new titles.

I had a big problem with CEX before buting used games I brought 5 only 3 worked so i sent the other 2 back which cost almost as much as the games themselves as i only paid around £1.50 each game cost me £3 to post they then recieved the games I never got them back rang up they said they dont have any record of my order terrible company

It's been in their T&Cs for years that they will or have they taken that out?

(And as pointed out, illegal if they have)

Where's it been in their terms?

The legality is certainly under scrutiny, that's for sure, for all intents and purposes, it is illegal.

I'm against the ruling personally, but I understand that it's an illogical view to hold.

The (S) in the title at CEX means Sealed. For example, they'll only buy sealed copies of games like Diablo 3 etc. Not sure how they've ended up with an opened copy of Skyrim though.
